AJ Hinch Breaks Silence On Tough Perez Decision

Manager A.J. Hinch sheds light on the strategic choice to place Wenceel Prez in Triple-A as the Tigers shape their Opening Day roster.

The Detroit Tigers made a strategic move by including top prospect Kevin McGonigle on their Opening Day roster. With the backdrop of what might be Tarik Skubal's final season in Detroit and Justin Verlander's farewell tour, McGonigle's addition signals the Tigers' intent to make a serious push this year. However, this decision also meant a veteran had to make way.

The choice boiled down to Parker Meadows or Wenceel Pérez. Meadows stays with the team, seemingly for one last shot, while Pérez starts in Triple-A Toledo.

Neither outfielder shone during spring training, but Tigers manager A.J. Hinch indicated that Pérez needs consistent playing time in the minors to refine his swing.

Hinch explained Pérez's assignment to Triple-A, emphasizing his contributions and potential future impact: "He's done so many good things for us - and he will do more in the coming months. Right now, he's going to Triple-A to focus on controlling the strike zone."

Originally signed as an infielder, Pérez transitioned to the outfield in 2024, which allowed him significant major league exposure over the past two seasons. Last year, he made strides, primarily serving as the Tigers' fourth outfielder with a slash line of .244/.308/.430, 13 home runs, and a wRC+ of 103.

While not stellar, his performance positioned him as a contender for a bench spot this spring. However, he fell short, striking out 12 times in 42 plate appearances, with all six hits being singles.

It's key to remember that the Opening Day roster is often just a starting point. Last year, Pérez began in Triple-A but became a crucial part of the Tigers' outfield as the season progressed. Once he refines his approach, there's a strong possibility he'll return to Detroit's lineup.
