Eddie Genborg is the kind of prospect who makes teammates notice him fast.
That was the read inside the Detroit Red Wings’ scouting process, and it helped push the 19-year-old right wing into the organization’s system after Detroit took him 44th overall in the 2025 NHL Draft. At 6-foot-1 and 179 pounds, Genborg isn’t being sold as a finesse specialist. He’s being valued for the stuff that tends to wear opponents down: the net-front battles, the corner work, the heavy hits and the edge he brings shift after shift.
Kris Draper said the Red Wings got a clear answer when they asked around at the NHL Scouting Combine about which teammates players would want to bring with them to the NHL.
“We have a question at the (NHL Scouting) Combine,” Detroit director of amateur scouting Kris Draper explained. “We always ask players, if you’re able to take one or two teammates with you to the NHL, who would you take? And it was unanimous that Eddie was that guy for everyone.
“Most of the guys on the Swedish team were saying they wanted to play with Eddie.”
Detroit took that seriously. Genborg fits the profile of a player who can make life miserable for opponents.
He’s comfortable in traffic, he gets to the net, and he does his scoring in the messiest areas of the ice. He also likes the grind work along the boards, which is exactly where the Red Wings see a lot of his value.
Last season gave a pretty good picture of why. Genborg scored nine goals and finished third in scoring for Timra in Sweden’s SHL with 25 points. He also helped Sweden win gold at the IIHF World Junior Championship.
One of the more memorable moments from his SHL season came when he laid a punishing open-ice hit on fellow Red Wings prospect Anton Johansson of Leksand.
Genborg also got a late-season look with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, and he made that stint count. In 11 games, he posted 1-2-3 and finished plus-two.
His momentum was interrupted, though, when he was injured in the first game of the AHL playoffs. That undisclosed injury is still affecting him.
The case for Genborg making the NHL is straightforward. He brings an agitating style that other teams won’t enjoy dealing with.
He has enough scoring touch to matter, even if he isn’t projecting as a big-time goal producer. And he plays with the kind of physical edge that can swing a game.
The questions are just as clear. Can he score enough once he gets to the NHL? And will that fearless, all-out style leave him more vulnerable to injury?
For now, the timeline points back overseas. Genborg has one year left on his SHL deal with Timra, so he’s expected to play in Sweden again this season. After Timra’s year ends, he’ll return to Grand Rapids and continue his development with the Griffins.
