The Detroit Red Wings’ front-office mess is bleeding into the player side of the ledger, and the biggest question right now is whether Dylan Larkin actually shows up at training camp.
Jim Biringer of NHLRumors.com and Full Press NHL discussed the situation Monday on TSN Radio in Montreal, and his read was pretty straightforward: unless something dramatic changes, Larkin is expected to be there.
“Yes, it does, because my expectation is that he’ll be at camp because unless they’re going to get a third team, and unless Detroit’s coming off their offer of, ‘ Oh, we need NHL players back in return, we need a number one center back in return for Dylan Larkin. Well, they’re going to have to patch some things up, and he’s going to have to be in training camp because if he doesn’t report, that gives every right to the Detroit Red Wings organization to suspend him, which means he doesn’t get paid.
I don’t think NHL players, they don’t like, they want to get their money, and they don’t want to go without paychecks. So unless he’s really adamant about not showing up, he’s going to be there at training camp.
Now the real question is: If he starts the season, does he finish the season in Detroit? My guess is probably not because they’ll have more options than what they’re giving them now.
Because Minnesota, Florida, Vegas, and Dallas don’t have what Detroit wants.”
The latest note on Larkin’s request says the list of teams hasn’t changed: the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, Florida Panthers, and Dallas Stars. Minnesota is still viewed as the frontrunner and the only team Larkin wants to land with, though that depends on Quinn Hughes extending in Minnesota. The Panthers are considered effectively out after the Brady Tkachuk acquisition, and the other teams still don’t have what Detroit is looking for.
So for now, the best guess is that Larkin reports to camp unless the next couple of weeks bring a breakthrough. And even then, the situation could shift again once Detroit hires a new general manager.
Simon Edvinsson is dealing with his own version of the same uncertainty.
Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now joined the Full Press Hockey Podcast and said Edvinsson’s agent still doesn’t know who to contact about a new deal, which is a pretty striking place to be this close to the season.
“Well, Edvinsson’s agent just recently said, like, he doesn’t know who he’s supposed to even be talking to to negotiate a contract. So that’s fairly alarming.
We’re this close to the season, and he’s saying that. We don’t know what’s going on.
Now, historically, if you look back to the (Lucas) Raymond and (Moritz) Seider negotiations, they were all finalized right on the eve of training camp, so I don’t expect anything to be done with Edvinsson until right around the time they’re supposed to report to camp.
Now, I still think Shawn Horcoff ’s a very competent front office man, and I think probably underrated because he’s lived in (Steve) Yzerman’s shadow. But he’s been responsible for the Grand Rapids franchise, and that’s been one of the, the best franchises in the AHL the last two three years. And so I think from what we’re told, he’s the one that’s going to handle all that stuff in, the interim basis.”
The expectation there is that Shawn Horcoff will handle the contract work in the interim, but the fact that Edvinsson’s camp still doesn’t know who to deal with is the part that stands out. Even so, there’s still time for the Red Wings to get it sorted before camp opens.
