Red Wings Suddenly Get A Tougher Canadiens Matchup Tonight

After recovering from offseason surgery, Kaiden Guhle is set to bolster the Canadiens' lineup in his season debut against the Red Wings.

Kaiden Guhle is set to finally get his 2026-27 season underway Saturday, and the Canadiens will welcome him back after a four-game absence caused by offseason surgery.

The Montreal defenseman had a minor procedure on his adductor muscle over the summer to deal with an issue that had already been bothering him. That problem limited him to 39 games in the 2025-26 regular season, so this return has been a while in the making.

When Guhle was on the ice last year, he still gave Montreal important minutes. The 6-foot-3 left-shot blueliner finished with two goals and 11 points in 39 regular-season games while averaging 19:28 of ice time. He then added eight assists and logged 20:29 per night over 19 playoff games as the Canadiens reached the Eastern Conference Final.

His comeback also comes with a fresh opening on the roster. Montreal moved depth defender Jayden Struble to the Nashville Predators on Friday, receiving a 2027 second-round pick in return. With that spot cleared, Daily Faceoff’s line combinations page has Guhle projected to skate beside Mike Matheson against the Detroit Red Wings at the Bell Centre.

Guhle’s path to this point has been a steady climb through the Canadiens organization. Montreal took him in the first round, 16th overall, in the 2020 NHL Draft. The Edmonton, Alta. native played junior hockey with the WHL’s Prince Albert Raiders and Edmonton Oil Kings before turning pro in 2022.

Aside from three games with the AHL’s Laval Rocket during the WHL pause in the 2020-21 season, Guhle has spent his entire pro career in the NHL with Montreal. Injuries have interrupted that run at different points over his four seasons, and his highest games total with the Canadiens came in 2023-24, when he played 70.

In 208 career NHL games with Montreal, Guhle has posted 18 goals, 69 points, and 171 penalty minutes. He has also chipped in eight assists across 24 playoff games.

Red Wings Standings Chase Just Got Tougher In The Atlantic

The Atlantic race is getting a little tighter for Detroit to navigate, with Ottawa set to add some important bodies back into its lineup after a stretch of injury absences. Defensemen Jake Sanderson and Artem Zub are expected back within the next few days, and forward Andr Burakovsky is also nearing a return from an upper-body injury, giving the Senators a chance to steady themselves at a time when every point matters in the division.

Detroit, meanwhile, made a pair of its own roster moves by activating forwards Chase Stillman and Carter Bear from the injured list and sending both to Grand Rapids. For the Red Wings, those transactions are more about keeping the pipeline moving than altering the NHL picture right away, but they underscore how quickly the standings chase can shift when rivals start getting healthier and depth pieces are being sorted out on both sides. Red Wings May Already Have Another Goalie Worth Watching

Michal Postava is off to a strong start in Grand Rapids, and the early returns have already given the Red Wings organization something else to monitor in net. He stopped 36 shots in a 2-1 win over the Manitoba Moose, helping the Griffins keep rolling at home and improve to 2-0-1-0 on the season.

For a team always watching its goaltending pipeline, Postavas first two games have stood out even more because of how calm he has looked. The Griffins have won their last four home openers, and with Postava posting a 1.50 goals-against average and a .947 save percentage so far, there is at least a little more reason to pay attention every time he gets the crease. Dylan Larkin Trade Chatter Just Took A Strange New Turn

Social media has added a strange layer to the Dylan Larkin trade chatter, with Canadiens fans being encouraged to make plenty of noise for the Red Wings center during an upcoming game in hopes of helping sway him toward Montreal. It is the kind of outside-the-box fan campaign that speaks to how badly some around the Canadiens want to believe Larkin could be part of their future, even as the rumor mill keeps spinning without anything official to grab onto.

The skepticism, though, is hard to miss. While the chatter has stirred up interest and mixed reactions ahead of Saturday's game, there is still no confirmation of any trade talk, and the broader sense around the speculation is that Larkin has not exactly been lining up for a move to Montreal. For now, it remains one more odd subplot in a league where fan passion can travel faster than facts. [Read more 🡒]
