Red Wings Suddenly Face Real Pressure In The Simon Edvinsson Talks

The Detroit Red Wings face a critical decision as the December 1 deadline approaches: sign Simon Edvinsson or entertain trade offers, with the San Jose Sharks emerging as notable suitors.

The Simon Edvinsson situation is heading toward a deadline, and the Detroit Red Wings still haven’t locked down their only unsigned restricted free agent. With just a little over a month left, the clock is becoming impossible to ignore: if the deal isn’t done by December 1, Edvinsson won’t be eligible to play in the NHL this season.

That doesn’t mean he’s disappearing from the league. Edvinsson will play in the NHL this season one way or another, and barring injury, he’ll be on the ice in 2026-27.

The real question is where that happens. Detroit still wants him back, but trade chatter is starting to build around the young defenseman.

Elliotte Friedman of 32 Thoughts said on Thursday’s podcast that the San Jose Sharks have emerged as a serious possibility.

"I do think the Red Wings and the Sharks have talked about Edvinsson pretty deeply," said Friedman on Thursday's podcast episode. "I don't know that that's gonna happen because I'm not sure what the Sharks are willing to do here or what the Red Wings like. But I know the two teams have talked pretty extensively."

Red Wings interim GM Shawn Horcoff has repeatedly said the priority is still to sign Edvinsson. But if that path stalls out, a line of teams with assets to spend could form quickly around a young defenseman with Edvinsson’s profile.

San Jose makes sense as one of the clubs in the mix because the Sharks have spent years collecting prospects and draft picks while inching out of their rebuild. Their stash includes names like Keaton Verhoeff and Igor Chernyshov, and Horcoff would likely have his eyes on former second overall pick Michael Misa above all.

That’s where the real question lands: how far would the Sharks go? Would they actually be willing to move Misa?

What price do they put on a top-pairing young defenseman? The Red Wings would have every reason to ask for a little extra, given Edvinsson’s age and the level he’s already reached.

From San Jose’s side, though, sending out the second overall pick for a defenseman is no small decision.

If the Red Wings could somehow land Misa, the upside would be obvious. The young center has the kind of talent that could grow into top-line minutes and potentially give Detroit a future answer after Dylan Larkin.

The Sharks aren’t the only team paying attention, either. Friedman also named the Philadelphia Flyers, St.

Louis Blues, Nashville Predators and Seattle Kraken as teams that have shown interest. Each comes with its own appeal and its own obstacles.

Philadelphia, for instance, could offer Matvei Michkov, but there are questions about how he would handle a move this close to his third year in the league and where he would fit in the lineup.

For now, Detroit is still juggling both urgency and uncertainty. The offense is improving, but the Edvinsson decision is still hanging there, and the Red Wings need to settle it as quickly as possible.

Red Wings Goalie Prospect Suddenly Has A Real Opening To Climb

Carter Gylander has spent years working his way through the Red Wings pipeline, a patient development path that has taken him from Colgate to the pro ranks and into the organizations minor league system. Drafted by Detroit in 2019, the goaltender is now in his first full professional season and trying to turn that long apprenticeship into a steadier role with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

The opportunity has been there in a small but meaningful way, with Gylander already seeing time for both of Detroits affiliates this season. For a prospect who chose to stay in the Red Wings organization after four seasons at Colgate, the challenge now is to keep stacking those chances and push himself closer to a full-time spot in Grand Rapids. Red Wings Just Entered A Dylan Larkin Crisis They Couldn't Avoid

Dylan Larkins situation has pushed the Red Wings into a place no team wants to reach with its captain, turning a roster matter into something much more serious. What had been a central part of Detroits long-term plan now sits in limbo, with the club trying to manage the fallout from a standoff that has become impossible to ignore.

The tension is now obvious enough that the next step feels less like a hockey decision than a crisis response. Detroit has already taken one formal move to address it, but the bigger question is how the organization handles a situation that cuts to the core of its leadership group and leaves the rest of the room waiting for resolution. Red Wings Just Entered A Chapter Detroit Fans Never Expected

The Red Wings walked into a strange new stretch Friday night and still managed to leave Chicago with a convincing 4-1 win over the Blackhawks. It was the first game of Detroits post-Dylan Larkin era, a reality that would have sounded unthinkable not long ago, and the tone around the club shifted even before the puck dropped.

Detroit got the kind of response it needed, with Lucas Raymond delivering the game-winning power-play goal and the rest of the lineup finding a way to keep moving forward. The bigger question hanging over the team now is how it handles the fallout from Larkins exit, since he told the team he would no longer play for Detroit and was suspended. [Read more 🡒]
