Red Wings Stun Fans as Math Shapes Their NHL Playoff Journey

With a challenging schedule ahead, the Detroit Red Wings are still mathematically poised to break their playoff drought, needing a strong finish to secure their spot.

In the NHL's current landscape, the Eastern Conference is proving to be a battleground unlike any other. With 10 teams boasting more points than any in the Pacific Division, Connor McDavid aptly described the Pacific playoff race as a "pillow fight." The East, on the other hand, is a gauntlet of fierce competition.

Historically, a team with 95 or more points had a 97% chance of making the Eastern playoffs. This season, projections suggest that snagging the last wildcard spot will require between 96 to 99 points. For the Red Wings, this means breaking their nine-year playoff drought will demand winning six or seven of their final 12 games.

In recent seasons, the points threshold in the East has been 91 (2024-25), 91 (2023-24), 92 (2022-23), and 85 (2021-22). The Red Wings' 91 points in 2023-24 saw them miss out due to a tiebreaker, and in 2021-22, the Capitals clinched a spot with 100 points, though 85 would have sufficed.

The pressure is palpable for the Eastern teams. The Red Wings' recent 4-2 loss to Boston was a tough pill to swallow, especially after leading 2-1 in the third period. The loss felt significant as both teams were neck and neck in the wildcard race.

Despite the setback, Detroit's Moritz Seider remains optimistic. "We’re in a great spot to fight our own battles," he said.

"The last couple of years we were waiting for help, and now it’s all in our hands. We have enough games left to force our luck.

It’s a great opportunity."

Indeed, the path to the playoffs is still open for the Red Wings. They currently hold a wildcard spot, and the math is on their side.

With 12 games left, they can earn up to 24 more points. If 97 points is the magic number, they need 13 more points, achievable with a 6-5-1 record.

That's a .541 points percentage, and their current rate is .600.

Should 99 points be necessary, they'll need 15 points, requiring a 7-4-1 finish-a .625 points percentage. It's a tougher challenge, but still within reach.

The Red Wings face the league’s 10th hardest schedule, but their rivals have it tougher. The Bruins have the most challenging schedule ahead, with the Blue Jackets, Islanders, Penguins, and Flyers also facing stiff competition.

The Eastern playoff race is intense, but the Red Wings have a fighting chance to carve their destiny.
