Red Wings Stun Canadiens With Late Game-Winner From DeBrincat

In a thrilling comeback, the Red Wings' playoff hopes soar as they rally past the Canadiens, powered by DeBrincat's crucial late-game heroics.

In a pivotal moment of the season, the Detroit Red Wings delivered a crucial victory over a divisional rival, the Montreal Canadiens, at Little Caesars Arena. Alex DeBrincat stepped up in the clutch, netting his 34th goal of the season at 16:35 in the third period, breaking a 1-1 deadlock. This goal not only secured a 3-1 win but also earned the Red Wings two vital points in the fiercely competitive Atlantic Division standings.

The win was doubly sweet as it kept the Canadiens from gaining any points. With this victory, Detroit finds itself tied with Montreal and the Boston Bruins at 84 points, holding onto the second Wild Card spot. The New York Islanders are breathing down their necks, just a point behind, while the Ottawa Senators trail by five.

Thursday's game saw the return of Andrew Copp, who had been sidelined with a lower-body injury for three games. However, team captain Dylan Larkin remained out despite participating in the morning skate.

The first period was a defensive battle, with no goals scored. Rookie Emmit Finnie nearly changed that narrative, hitting the post early in the game. Montreal eventually broke through late in the second period with a power-play goal from Juraj Slafkovsky, capitalizing just seconds into their advantage after Moritz Seider was penalized.

Detroit found some luck in the third period when J.T. Compher was credited with the game-tying goal. A shot from Patrick Kane was stopped by Canadiens goalie Jakub Dobes, but the rebound deflected off Compher’s leg into the net.

As the game seemed to be heading for overtime, DeBrincat seized a rolling puck from Montreal's Mike Matheson and went one-on-one with Dobes, scoring a dazzling backhander that electrified the home crowd.

With time winding down, Montreal pulled Dobes for an extra attacker, but Copp iced the game with an empty-netter, marking his ninth goal of the season.

Goaltender John Gibson was a rock for Detroit, making 32 saves, while Dobes stopped 25 shots for Montreal. The Red Wings, now 2-0-1 in their last three outings, gear up for another significant showdown against the Bruins on Saturday.

Detroit's passionate fan base, praised by Todd McLellan, continues to be a driving force for the team, making Little Caesars Arena a fortress. As the playoff race heats up, the Red Wings are proving they have the grit and determination to make a strong push.
