Detroit’s scoring problems at even strength are already hanging over the 2026-27 season, and Todd McLellan isn’t dressing them up as anything simple.
“I wish I could say it’s as simple as, like, ‘Let’s play a little heavier… along the boards, around the net front, screens, tip-ins, deflections,'” McLellan said, according to Max Bultman of The Athletic. “It’s not.
It’s not that simple; it’s not that easy. We are a good entry team.
We aren’t as strong forechecking, so that has to blossom a little bit more.”
That reality is what led NHL insider Pierre LeBrun to toss out a name that would definitely get attention in Detroit: Patrik Laine. “I wonder about Patrik Laine as a possible fit in Detroit?” LeBrun wrote.
Laine is still unsigned as an unrestricted free agent, and the ideas floating around him have included a professional tryout (PTO) or a cheap one-year deal loaded with bonuses. So far, nothing has happened.
It’s fair to say Laine doesn’t neatly answer Detroit’s forechecking issues at 5-on-5. But he does bring one thing the Red Wings need more of: scoring.
That’s where the conversation gets interesting. On social media, the reactions split the way you’d expect.
Some fans immediately pointed to Laine’s injury history and the fact that he hasn’t played much in recent seasons. Others questioned whether a pure shooter really fits Detroit’s specific need for 5-on-5 offense.
Since Laine is known as a power play specialist, those doubts are easy to understand.
There were also reminders of his difficult departures from both Columbus and Winnipeg, with some fans wondering whether another team would even want to take the gamble. That baggage may help explain why he remains without a job.
Still, not everyone dismissed the idea. Some saw it as exactly the kind of low-risk swing a team in Detroit’s spot can make, especially after losing scoring punch this offseason and with little downside to taking a shot on a player who hasn’t drawn much interest elsewhere.
Shawn Horcoff is the interim general manager in Detroit, and a move like that would count as the kind of savvy call that could strengthen his case to stay in the role full time. If Laine produced on a team-friendly contract, that would give ownership something real to think about.
For now, it’s only speculation. But the fact that Laine’s name is even in the mix says plenty about the pressure on Detroit to find offense.
