The Detroit Red Wings made a curious little move on August 20, 2026, and it came with a wrinkle that only adds to the day’s noise around the organization.
Detroit acquired center Sutter Muzzatti from the Nashville Predators for future considerations, then quickly locked him up on a two-year, entry-level contract.
Muzzatti is 23 years old and was taken with the 143rd pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-foot-5 center spent last season with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, where he put up 32 points in 37 NCAA games.
On paper, this doesn’t look like a move aimed at solving a big-league need right away. Muzzatti is fresh out of college, and the more realistic landing spot is Grand Rapids. He gives the Griffins another center option and adds some depth to a group that already has plenty of talent.
That roster picture is where the move gets interesting. Grand Rapids currently lists seven centers: Nate Danielson, Carter Bear, Sheldon Dries, Ondrej Becher, Noah Dower-Nilsson, Theo Rochette and Muzzatti. Since some of those players can slide to wing, especially Bear, it’s hard to imagine all seven staying in the same mix.
That makes Nate Danielson the name that jumps out. He’s in a huge year, and the addition of Muzzatti only sharpens the path in front of him. Danielson posted seven points in 28 games last season, and the Red Wings are expecting more from him going forward.
The trade is also unusual because of the timing around Detroit’s front office situation. The Red Wings are still making moves without a general manager, and this one runs against earlier reports that said interim general manager Shawn Horcoff would not be making trades.
Earlier this month, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reported that Shawn Horcoff would be handling day-to-day duties, but would not be in charge of any trades.
That leaves two possibilities: either Steve Yzerman made this deal, or the earlier reporting was off. Either way, the lack of information coming out of the Yzerman front office remains part of the story.
For now, the move looks less like a headline-grabber and more like a depth play with a clear AHL angle. It gives Grand Rapids another body at center, gives Muzzatti a contract, and adds one more layer to Danielson’s push.
