Jesse Kiiskinen kept Grand Rapids rolling Sunday, and he did it in a way that should look familiar to anyone who has lived through a three-game AHL weekend.
The Griffins forward piled up a hat trick and an assist in a 5-1 win over the Chicago Wolves at home, capping a stretch that began with a Friday victory over the Manitoba Moose, continued with a road loss to the Milwaukee Admirals, and ended with another home win. Grand Rapids didn’t get back from Milwaukee until the wee hours of the morning before turning around for a 4 p.m. puck drop.
That kind of schedule is exactly the sort of thing veteran winger Dominik Shine was talking about when he recalled a lesson from a former teammate about the value of showing up on Sundays.
“You can make a career by being good on Sunday,” Shine said. “(Jesse Kiiskinen) is off to a good start.”
Kiiskinen became the first Griffins rookie to score a regular season hat trick since 2013. Tyler Bertuzzi also had a hat trick for Grand Rapids in a playoff game in 2016.
Coach Dan Watson said teams get through three-in-three weekends by depending on players who bring energy, and Kiiskinen fit the bill right away.
“He was able to provide that early for us,” Watson said.
The Finnish prospect, acquired by the Detroit Red Wings organization, opened the scoring at 5:45 of the first period, struck again at 11:49 to make it 2-0, and finished his night with another goal 1:20 into the second. He also added an assist.
Dylan James, Kiiskinen’s roommate and linemate, finished with a goal and an assist. Carter Bear picked up an assist as well, while defenseman Shai Buium and forward Kienan Draper each recorded their third assist of the season.
Kiiskinen said the three-in-three setup suits his style because, “I am the kind of player who wants to play.”
“Maybe I have a little too much energy,” he joked.
He’s certainly making that energy count. Through his first five AHL games, Kiiskinen has five goals and seven points, a strong early return for a player the organization is counting on for more scoring. Watson put it simply: “He’s a finisher.”
Kiiskinen was originally drafted by the Nashville Predators in 2023 before Nashville moved his rights to the Red Wings, along with a second-round pick, in the deal that sent defenseman Andrew Gibson to Nashville.

Dylan Larkin Trade Talk Now Hinges On One Massive Detroit Decision
Dylan Larkins trade request has put the Red Wings in a familiar but uncomfortable spot, with the captain holding a full no-trade clause and control over where this situation goes next. Among the teams believed to be in the mix, Florida stands out because of Larkins existing familiarity with some of the Panthers players and management from past international play, which makes the fit easier to imagine than most.
For the Panthers, the appeal is obvious. Theyre dealing with injuries and always have to juggle the salary cap carefully, so any pursuit of Larkin would have to be measured against the roster consequences of making it happen. The question now is whether Detroit and Florida can align on a framework that makes sense for both sides, especially if the price eventually requires a significant piece from the Panthers current lineup. Red Wings Appear Ready To Lock In A Core Scorer
The Red Wings appear to be on the verge of keeping one of their most important finishers in place, with Alex DeBrincats strong play this season making him an obvious priority in Detroit. After arriving as a proven scorer, he has quickly become a central piece of the lineup, and the organization now seems ready to reward that impact with a long-term commitment.
Multiple reports from Elliotte Friedman, Chris Johnston and Emily Kaplan point to an agreement that would keep DeBrincat tied to Detroit for years to come, a sign the club wants more than a short window of production from a player who has already changed the look of its attack. The only step left is the formal word from the team, which appears to be coming soon. [Read more 🡒]
Red Wings Found A Dangerous New Line But Still Let One Slip Away
Alex DeBrincat gave Detroit a much-needed spark, scoring twice and adding an assist in a back-and-forth game against New Jersey, but it still ended in a 5-4 loss for the Red Wings. The Devils spread the offense around with goals from Jesper Bratt, Evan Rodrigues, Anthony Mantha and Nico Hischier, while Detroit had enough firepower to stay in it and make the night feel like more than just another defeat.
The shot margin was part of the story, too, with New Jersey testing Detroit more often over the course of the game. Even so, the Red Wings left the building knowing they had stumbled onto a line that created real problems for the Devils, the kind of combination that can change how opponents have to defend them if it keeps showing up.
