Sergei Fedorov’s name has surfaced in a very different kind of spotlight this week.
After the Detroit Red Wings retired his No. 91 earlier this year and sent his jersey to the rafters at Little Caesars Arena, the former star has now been added to the Ukrainian website Myrotvorets, which publishes a list of people it considers “enemies of Ukraine”.
The site, whose name translates to peacemaker, says it identifies people “whose actions have signs of crimes against the national security of Ukraine, peace, human security, and international law”. It was launched in 2014 by Ukrainian politician and activist Georgy Tuka, and in Russia it is recognized as extremist and banned.
Fedorov is listed on the site with accusations that he has tried to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. The website also says he is supporting the conduct of a special military operation.
Exactly how Fedorov is supposedly undermining Ukraine is not clear from the listing. He is a member of the board of CKSA Moscow, the former Russian Red Army team. He also played for the club and later coached CSKA Moscow to a pair of KHL Gagarin Cup titles.
The latest attention on Fedorov stands in sharp contrast to the hockey legacy the Red Wings celebrated earlier this year. He was a three-time Stanley Cup champion with Detroit in 1996-97, 1997-98, and 2001-02.
Fedorov, 56, also made NHL history in 1993-94, becoming the first and still only player to win the Hart Trophy as league MVP and the Selke Trophy as the NHL’s best defensive forward in the same season.
The Hockey Hall of Fame honored Fedorov with enshrinement in 2015.
