Red Wings Just Set Up Their Next Big Contract Decision

Did the Detroit Red Wings jump the gun by prioritizing DeBrincat's extension over Edvinsson's future with the team?

Detroit Red Wings fans finally got a reason to exhale on Tuesday when the club locked up Alex DeBrincat on a seven-year, $91 million deal. It was the kind of move that had been expected for a while, and it got done without much drama.

But for all the relief that came with it, the timing raises a fair question: did the Red Wings take care of the easier business before the more important one?

That’s the real issue here. This is not about cap space.

It’s about optics, and about which player the organization should have made the priority. The argument is that Simon Edvinsson should have come first.

DeBrincat’s deal was never going to be a heavy lift. The Cat had made it clear he wanted to stay in Detroit, so there was little reason to think this would turn into a drawn-out negotiation. In that sense, it was the cleaner of the two situations.

Edvinsson is the tougher one, and those are the kinds of matters teams usually want to handle first. If there’s one piece of business that demands urgency, it’s the one that could become complicated. The easier extension can wait.

There is a case to be made for Shawn Horcoff wanting to clear DeBrincat off the board so he could focus entirely on Edvinsson and Dylan Larkin. Still, given how often Horcoff has stressed his desire to sign the 23-year-old defenseman, it would have made sense to press harder there first.

Red Wings GM Shawn Horcoff says he has "zero interest" in trading Simon Edvisson. "Not something I'm entertaining. We want to sign him."

Kudos to Horcoff for taking the obvious step and getting DeBrincat done. Plenty of teams would stall on the easiest item while chasing bigger headaches. Detroit at least avoided that.

Even so, the Edvinsson situation can’t be allowed to linger much longer.

The DeBrincat extension matters because of what it says beyond the player himself. The Red Wings have taken some hits to their image, from the Larkin trade request to the GM mess to the Edvinsson situation. Getting this deal done cleanly helps push back against that noise.

It also sends a message to Edvinsson. The club is showing that it isn’t falling apart.

There was the hiccup with former GM Steve Yzerman and Larkin, but Larkin has kept playing well even after losing his captaincy. Horcoff, meanwhile, is trying to steady things after a rough start to the season.

There may even be a little hidden value here for Detroit. If anything good comes out of the DeBrincat extension beyond the contract itself, it’s that an Edvinsson deal may not be far behind. The organization has put the right message out there, and now it’s a question of whether that carries over into actual good will.

Sometimes a move like this does more than settle one player’s future. It can shift the mood around the entire team.

Carter Mazur Is Running Out Of Chances With The Red Wings

Carter Mazurs path in Detroit has already been defined too often by bad timing. Since the Red Wings drafted him in 2021, injuries have repeatedly interrupted his momentum, including the season-ending setback on his first shift of the 2024-25 season. After finally getting back into the mix this year, he has been trying to reestablish himself while working with limited ice time and production.

The bigger issue now is less about talent than opportunity. Mazur needs to show enough to stick in the lineup as the Red Wings sort through roster decisions and decide who can hold down a regular role. For a young player still trying to carve out an NHL future, every game matters, and the margin for error is getting smaller. [Read more 🡒]

Red Wings Face Another Huge Goalie Decision They Can't Miss

Detroits goaltending picture is getting crowded in a hurry, and the organization is once again staring at a decision it cannot afford to miss. The trade of top prospect Sebastian Cossa changed the long-term outlook, while Michal Postava has quietly pushed himself into the conversation with strong play in Grand Rapids, giving the Red Wings another name to track as they sort out what the future in net should look like.

What makes the situation trickier is that neither goalie has really been given a meaningful NHL runway, leaving Detroit to project from a distance instead of leaning on certainty. The choices that put the club in this spot were made under the previous regime, and with new leadership in place, the next round of decisions could look very different as the Red Wings try to avoid another misstep at a position that can shape everything. Red Wings Front Office Uncertainty Could Define Detroits Next Direction

Detroits offseason has started with a layer of front-office uncertainty that could shape everything from the next hire to the next major roster decision. Owner Chris Ilitch said the club is looking for a President of Hockey Operations who will then decide on the full-time general manager, leaving the organization in a transition period while interim GM Shawn Horcoff keeps working with the roster in the meantime.

Horcoff remains a candidate for the permanent job, but the bigger question for fans is how much longer the current setup will linger while trade talks involving former captain Dylan Larkin continue. Restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson is not being shopped by Horcoff at this point, yet the broader picture still feels fluid as Detroit tries to sort out who will ultimately be steering the next phase.
