Dan Cleary’s new title comes with a familiar setting in Grand Rapids, but the job description has changed.
After Shawn Horcoff was named interim GM of the Detroit Red Wings, the front office shuffle opened the door for Cleary to step into Horcoff’s old post as the interim GM of the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, the organization’s top farm club. Cleary described it simply: “New role for sure,” he said in an interview on the Griffins YouTube page.
For Cleary, though, the transition is less about learning the building and more about taking command of a place he already knows well. In recent seasons, he was a constant presence around Van Andel Arena, where he’d be skating and helping during practices. He said, “I’m very familiar with the surroundings and the people who do business around here,” and added, “And certainly all the players and the coaches.”
Now, instead of being the familiar face in the background, he’s the one responsible for the operation.
“It’s a great opportunity,” Cleary said. “I’m super excited.”
The move also comes with a different tone inside the development pipeline. Cleary made it clear he wants Red Wings prospects and Griffins players to be open with him, even if that means speaking bluntly about where they stand. He said his familiarity with the organization helps, noting, “I’ve been around quite a bit here in particular,” and that he’s worked with many of the younger players “since they were drafted.”
That continuity matters to him, especially with players who already know the system and the people around it. “Some of the newer, older guys that are here, I don’t know as well, but I know the majority of them. So that continuity is important.”
Cleary also laid out the kind of communication style he expects to bring to the role. “I’m a very black and white guy,” he said.
“I don’t really live in the gray area. So if you need to know where you stand or what you can do to help you get better, I’m certainly the guy to come and ask.
“I want these guys to be able to speak to me freely. I told them, I’m here to help you guys achieve your goals.”

Chris Ilitchs Red Wings Promises Already Look Shaky
When Chris Ilitch sat down for an interview, he tried to project stability around the Red Wings future, promising contract extensions for Simon Edvinsson and Alex DeBrincat while also saying the organizations hockey leaders had the freedom to run the team. It was the kind of message meant to calm a restless fan base and reinforce that the front office had a plan, even as frustration around the franchise has continued to build.
More than two weeks later, the follow-through has not matched the talk. Edvinsson has yet to sign and is practicing in Sweden, and DeBrincat also remains without an extension, leaving Ilitchs comments looking premature at best. Add in the broader unease around the teams direction and the poor results that have fed it, and the latest round of promises has only sharpened the scrutiny on how much control and clarity the Red Wings actually have. Red Wings Face A Brutal Simon Edvinsson Problem Before Opening Night
Simon Edvinssons offseason has taken an unusual turn for the Red Wings as the restricted free agent defenseman has headed back to Sweden to train with Frolunda ahead of the 2026-27 season. Edvinsson did report to Detroits training camp and took part in non-scrimmage drills, but he is not practicing with the club right now while contract negotiations remain unsettled.
Interim GM Shawn Horcoff said the organization will keep talking with Edvinsson and his representatives, which leaves the situation very much in play as opening night approaches. The shape of the deal is the real hang-up here, with Detroit weighing one direction and Edvinssons side favoring another, and the longer this drags on the more awkward the timing becomes for a player the Red Wings would clearly like to have on the ice. Red Wings Opening Night Suddenly Hinges On Simon Edvinsson
Simon Edvinsson has spent the final stretch before the Red Wings' season opener back in familiar surroundings, practicing in Sweden with Frlunda HC while still waiting on a contract from Detroit. The top young defenseman took part in training camp without a deal, a notable wrinkle for a player who became a meaningful part of the blue line last season and figured to be part of the conversation again as the schedule turns over.
The timing leaves Detroit in an awkward spot just days before opening night, with its defensive plans still tied to a negotiation that has yet to be finished. Edvinsson is preparing abroad while the Red Wings sort through the last details, and until something is finalized, his status for the opener against the Rangers remains unsettled. [Read more 🡒]
