Training camp is closing in on the Detroit Red Wings, and the pressure points are piling up. The club still does not have a general manager in place, and the Dylan Larkin situation is hanging over everything.
On Daily Faceoff, Jeff Marek and Jason Gregor dug into how awkward the setup looks right now, especially with no full-time decision-maker to steer a possible Larkin move. Gregor said Larkin is “a different scenario” than Connor Hellebuyck, and added that he does not see “how Florida and Vegas and, and these teams can really offer a package that makes much sense for Detroit at this moment.”
He also stressed that the Red Wings are operating without a clear hand on the wheel. Gregor called it “a rudderless boat,” then said, “Right now it’s like it’s an automated organization for the Red Wings.”
The bigger issue, Gregor argued, is timing. Detroit is still searching for Chris Illich’s replacement, and he believes that makes a Larkin trade too important to leave to the current interim group.
“You can’t facilitate a Dylan Larkin trade,” Gregor said, adding that if he were interviewing for the GM job, he would want to explain how he’d handle Larkin. “I wouldn’t want someone to trade Dylan Larkin and then be like, ‘Okay, now we’re going to hire you, and you know what?
Maybe we got three picks or whatever, but oh, we still want to make the playoffs.’”
Marek agreed that this kind of call is too big to hand off to the temporary leadership. He said one of the first questions for the new hire should be, “What would you do with Dylan Larkin right now?” Marek added that he does not think it would be right to make the move now and “potentially handicap the, the new manager coming in.”
The conversation also turned to how many layers are wrapped into the situation. Marek pointed to questions around Edvinsson, the possibility of Larkin starting the season, and how the organization would have to work the market if it wants to get him into a place where a trade can actually happen.
For now, both Marek and Gregor landed on the same point: Detroit should not be making this decision before the GM hire is done. Gregor said the move is simply too big for “the, the temporary custodians of the Detroit Red Wings,” and Marek echoed that the team cannot do anything with Larkin until “you hire your full-time guy.”
That leaves one path if Larkin’s stance does not change. Gregor said it now looks like “Dylan Larkin’s got to go to camp, and Dylan Larkin’s got to play, and he’s got to play his way into a trade if that’s what he wants.”
That, Gregor said, would require plenty of work behind the scenes. He described the amount of smoothing over it would take, including explaining that “it’s a different situation with a new manager, and Dylan is excited to play here.”
Then comes the captaincy problem, which Marek and Gregor both recognized as another complication: “How do you have a captain on your team who’s asked for a trade very publicly? We like, there’s that night, nightmare, right?”
