Red Wings Got A Breakthrough Performance At The Perfect Time

In a thrilling come-from-behind victory, the Detroit Red Wings outmaneuvered the Florida Panthers in the final frame, showcasing resilience and a strategic power play to kick off November with a decisive win.

The Detroit Red Wings opened their November slate with a 5-3 win over the Florida Panthers in the first half of a back-to-back, and they did it with a third period that finally put the game out of reach.

Justin Faulk and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard each finished with two points, while Carter Mazur scored his first NHL goal. Emmitt Finnie added an empty-netter in the closing seconds to seal it.

Detroit got on the board first when Mazur scored in the opening period, but the Panthers answered after Daniil Tarasov misplayed a puck along the boards and Florida turned that mistake into a chance for Sam Reinhart. Reinhart finished the sequence with a wrist shot over Tarasov’s shoulder to tie the game before the first intermission.

The Red Wings went back in front early in the second period on a goal from Alex DeBrincat, only to give up a shorthanded goal later in the frame after a turnover near Florida goalie Jacob Markstrom sparked a three-on-two the other way. That left the game knotted again.

Faulk then stepped in with Detroit’s lone power-play goal of the night, firing from the blueline to restore the lead. Brandsegg-Nygard followed with his third goal of the season, pushing the Red Wings ahead by two for the first time at 4-2.

Florida made one last push after pulling Markstrom, and Sam Bennett trimmed the margin to 4-3 with 3:20 remaining. But Finnie’s empty-net goal in the final seconds finished the job.

Head coach Todd McLellan said, “I thought goalies on both sides played well. We won the special teams battle, so at the end of the night, to win in this building you have to have all of that and maybe sometimes more.”

Brandsegg-Nygard also pointed to the challenge of the matchup, saying, “It’s a tough building to go into,” Brandsegg-Nygard said, “They play hard, and I felt, or I thought we played hard back.”

The Red Wings were out-hit 2:1 by the Panthers by the second intermission, but they still managed to survive the physical push and cash in on the special teams edge. Detroit now turns to a tougher test tomorrow night against the Lightning.

Red Wings Edvinsson Stalemate Just Took A More Alarming Turn

Simon Edvinssons contract situation has already been one of the more uncomfortable storylines around the Red Wings, and it appears to have grown more complicated in the wake of Steve Yzermans dismissal. Detroit still has the young defenseman unsigned, and the uncertainty around his future has lingered as the team moves into a stretch of games against division rivals.

The backdrop gets even more interesting with reports that Carolina once tried to pry Edvinsson away with an offer sheet while Yzerman was still in charge, only for that path to fade once the front office changed. Since then, the stalemate has only hardened, and the latest word is that Edvinsson would now rather be dealt than simply wait this out, leaving Detroit with another unresolved issue hanging over the roster. Red Wings May Be Running Out Of Time To Pick A Goalie Direction

Since Jimmy Howard retired in 2021, the Red Wings have cycled through 14 different goaltenders, a number that says plenty about how unsettled the position has been in Detroit. The latest wrinkle is Michal Postava, who has started to look like more than just another prospect in the pipeline after turning heads in both the NHL and AHL, giving the organization a fresh option at a spot that has been hard to stabilize.

John Gibsons uneven October only sharpened the question of where this all goes next, especially with Daniil Tarasov also in the picture and a roster spot not likely to open itself. Detroit may need to choose a direction soon, whether that means moving Gibson or Tarasov to create space for Postava, even if the return in any deal is expected to be modest. [Read more 🡒]

Red Wings May Have A Goalie Decision Brewing In Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids has opened the season looking like a team that knows exactly how it wants to play, and the early results have backed it up. The Griffins have won six of their first eight games, with Michal Postava giving them a steady presence in net as Detroit keeps a close eye on what is developing a little farther down the organizational ladder.

Postavas rise has added another layer to the Red Wings goaltending picture, especially after his NHL debut and first start already gave the organization a glimpse of what he can do under pressure. Under Dan Watson, the Griffins have leaned into a hard-nosed style, and while the start has been encouraging, the bigger question now is whether this pace can hold as the season settles in.
