Red Wings Get One Player Back But Now Face A New Problem Up Front

Jacob Bernard-Docker returns to the ice as the Detroit Red Wings adjust their lineup amidst recent injuries.

The Red Wings got one defenseman back and lost a forward to injured reserve in a roster shuffle that leaves Detroit a little crowded on the blue line and thin up front.

According to a team announcement, the Red Wings activated Jacob Bernard-Docker from injured reserve. To make room, Detroit placed J.T. Compher on injured reserve retroactive to October 4th.

Bernard-Docker, 26, is already in his second season with the club. He arrived in Detroit after the Ottawa Senators declined to issue him a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent two summers ago. About nine months after first signing with the Red Wings, he landed a two-year, $3.2MM extension with a $1.6MM AAV.

Last season, Bernard-Docker gave Detroit steady work in a limited role. He finished with one goal and five points in 63 games, posted a net-zero rating and averaged 14:49 of ice time per night. He also chipped in 87 blocked shots and 66 hits, while finishing with a 93.9% on-ice SV% at even strength despite starting most of his shifts in the defensive zone.

His 2026-27 season began on the shelf after an upper-body injury in preseason cost him the first three games. Now he’s back, though Detroit’s decision to stop there is a little surprising given the current roster picture.

With Compher moving to injured reserve, the Red Wings now have nine defensemen on the active roster. Even if they’re fine using seven defensemen on a given night, that still leaves two blue-liners in the press box.

And with all three players on Detroit’s injured reserve listed as forwards - including Mason Appleton and Marco Kasper - the team could use more forward depth soon. Sheldon Dries is currently on the roster under emergency conditions, so he could be shifted to a standard call-up tomorrow.

Compher, who missed Tuesday’s game against the Ottawa Senators, is also ruled out for tomorrow’s matchup with the Seattle Kraken and Saturday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens because of his undisclosed injury. Because his injured reserve move is retroactive to October 4th, he would be eligible to return next week against the New Jersey Devils if he’s cleared.

Red Wings Standings Chase Just Got Tougher In The Atlantic

The Atlantic race is getting a little tighter for Detroit to navigate, with Ottawa set to add some important bodies back into its lineup after a stretch of injury absences. Defensemen Jake Sanderson and Artem Zub are expected back within the next few days, and forward Andr Burakovsky is also nearing a return from an upper-body injury, giving the Senators a chance to steady themselves at a time when every point matters in the division.

Detroit, meanwhile, made a pair of its own roster moves by activating forwards Chase Stillman and Carter Bear from the injured list and sending both to Grand Rapids. For the Red Wings, those transactions are more about keeping the pipeline moving than altering the NHL picture right away, but they underscore how quickly the standings chase can shift when rivals start getting healthier and depth pieces are being sorted out on both sides. Red Wings May Already Have Another Goalie Worth Watching

Michal Postava is off to a strong start in Grand Rapids, and the early returns have already given the Red Wings organization something else to monitor in net. He stopped 36 shots in a 2-1 win over the Manitoba Moose, helping the Griffins keep rolling at home and improve to 2-0-1-0 on the season.

For a team always watching its goaltending pipeline, Postavas first two games have stood out even more because of how calm he has looked. The Griffins have won their last four home openers, and with Postava posting a 1.50 goals-against average and a .947 save percentage so far, there is at least a little more reason to pay attention every time he gets the crease. Red Wings Suddenly Get A Tougher Canadiens Matchup Tonight

The Canadiens are getting a significant boost on the blue line tonight, and it comes at a time when theyve already been trying to sharpen the edges of their roster. Kaiden Guhle is set to make his season debut after missing the first four games following offseason surgery on his adductor muscle, and Montreal plans to slot him next to Mike Matheson against the Red Wings.

To make room for Guhles return, Montreal recently moved Jayden Struble out of the picture in a trade with Nashville for a 2027 second-round pick. For Detroit, it means the matchup suddenly looks a little stiffer on a night when the Canadiens can roll out a more complete defense and lean on a player theyve been waiting to get back. [Read more 🡒]
