Red Wings Get An Early Road Test In Kraken Rematch

The Detroit Red Wings aim to correct past mistakes and display a consistent performance as they kick off their road trip against the Seattle Kraken.

The Detroit Red Wings are heading west with a chance to wipe away an ugly memory from earlier this month.

After spending seven of their first eight home games of the 2026-27 NHL season at Little Caesars Arena, Detroit has now moved onto a four-game road trip. The first stop comes Tuesday night against the Seattle Kraken, a rematch of the 6-3 loss the Red Wings suffered in Detroit earlier in the month.

That previous meeting had a frustrating shape to it for the Red Wings. They controlled the first period and had the better of the shots, then got an early second-period goal from William Wallinder.

From there, it unraveled fast. Seattle scored three times in a span of 3:05, and Detroit never recovered.

Forward Andrew Copp said the game was a tale of two very different stretches.

“I thought we played - that was the game we played a really solid 45 minutes, but a horrible 15 minutes in the middle of the game,” said forward Andrew Copp.

Copp said the answer is less about reinventing anything and more about sustaining the right habits from puck drop to finish.

“I think we just have to stick with that plan. I thought we had a really good first (period)...we just have to find that blend where we’re moving our feet and checking well, and playing direct.

“It’s not a real secret recipe, it’s just, can we do it night in and night out?”

That same theme showed up again after Detroit’s 4-3 shootout win over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night. Head coach Todd McLellan emphasized the need for the Red Wings to win those kind of “scrappy” games, and first-year forward Viktor Arvidsson echoed that message.

"I think we're good when we have volume shooting and being good on the forecheck, keeping pucks alive after the initial shot," he said. "I think we can do a little bit better job of getting those second opportunities in front of the net and bury those kind of chances."

Arvidsson also pointed to the earlier loss to Seattle as the one game that has slipped through Detroit’s fingers this season.

"I think we've been in every game, we've been close in every game - I think that Seattle game got away from us," he said. "We just have to keep trying."

The Red Wings and Kraken will meet at Climate Pledge Arena on Tuesday at 9:40 p.m. ET.

Red Wings Rally Showed Fight But Exposed A Bigger Problem

The Red Wings left Climate Pledge Arena with a point and plenty to like about their third-period push, even if the end result still felt like one that slipped away. Down by three heading into the final period, Detroit battled back enough to force overtime and eventually a shootout, extending its run to five straight games with at least one point and moving to 3-3-3 on the season.

The comeback was fueled by a pair of key moments that should matter to the locker room, including Lucas Raymond finally getting on the board and Alex DeBrincat reaching a major career milestone while helping drag the game back to level. Still, the bigger concern for Detroit is how often it is having to chase from behind in the first place, because the rally was impressive but it also underscored how much work remains before these points start feeling routine instead of salvaged. Henrik Zetterbergs Jersey Retirement Turned Into An Awkward Scene

Henrik Zetterbergs No. 20 jersey retirement at Timra was meant to be a celebratory night for the former Red Wings star, but the ceremony before a game against Bjrklven turned awkward almost immediately. A few visiting Bjrklven fans booed during the tribute, spoiling a moment that should have been centered on Zetterberg and his long run with the Swedish club that helped launch his career.

The embarrassment did not stop there, since Timra also had to acknowledge a mistake on Zetterbergs banner tied to the 2004-05 season, which it blamed on a supplier error. Bjrklven later issued an apology, and the fallout even reached the business side when a sponsor withdrew support from the clubs supporters group, a harsh reminder of how quickly a tribute can turn into a problem. Dylan Larkin Trade Talks Just Got More Real For Red Wings Fans

Dylan Larkins name has stayed in the middle of the Red Wings conversation, but the latest reporting suggests the possibilities around him may be widening. With trade discussions reportedly gaining momentum and some insiders pointing to a deal in the near future, the situation has moved from background noise to something Detroit fans have to watch closely as the process develops.

One notable wrinkle is the scope of the list Larkin has reportedly expanded, which hints at a much broader market than a simple two-team discussion. It also leaves out Montreal, a detail sure to register with anyone following the rumor mill, especially with interest around the Canadiens having lingered for some time. For the Red Wings, the next stretch could determine whether this remains speculation or turns into a major roster shakeup. [Read more 🡒]
