The Detroit Red Wings have been busy reshuffling the front office, but one part of the operation is staying right where it is: Europe.
Since Steve Yzerman’s removal as GM, the organization has seen plenty of movement. Shawn Horcoff stepped in as interim GM, Dan Cleary took over as interim GM of the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, and assistant GM Kris Draper shifted from amateur scouting to run the club’s pro scouting operation.
Draper was at the Minnesota Wild vs. Buffalo Sabres game on Tuesday.
Jesse Wallin was elevated to director of amateur scouting, and Mark Leach, who previously worked as a Red Wings scout, has returned in that same type of role.
But while the North American side of the house has been in flux, the Red Wings’ European setup has not changed.
Nicklas Lidstrom is still serving as vice president of hockey operations, and now he’ll be taking on more responsibility in Europe as well.
“My role is largely unchanged, with the addition that I will have more responsibility for Red Wings’ operations in Europe,” Lidstrom told Swedish website Expressen. “Yes, I expected that.
“The title is the same as before. I will mostly work with Horcoff.”
Lidstrom also said Niklas Kronwall, who serves as director of European development, and Hakan Andersson, the director of European scouting, will remain in their current positions.
As for what comes next at the top of the hockey department, Lidstrom said he doesn’t know whether Horcoff could eventually get the GM job on a permanent basis.
“That is an ownership question right now about how to move forward, so I don’t know the answer to that question,” Lidstrom said. “I expect him to be one of the candidates for the job. But I don’t know what the organization will look like going forward.”

Red Wings Have Two Very Different Roster Battles Unfolding
Michael Brandsegg-Nygards second NHL season is already looking different in the ways that matter most to coaches. Todd McLellan has seen a winger who looks more confident and assertive, with noticeable gains in his physical play and his positioning, the kind of progression that can turn a young player from merely surviving shifts to influencing them.
Carter Mazur, meanwhile, is in a much shakier spot as camp and roster decisions continue to loom. He is still trying to prove he belongs in Detroit, even after picking up his first NHL point in a win over the Ottawa Senators, and his immediate future remains one of the more interesting questions on the roster. Red Wings Fans Just Got Another Harsh Free Agency Reality Check
Rumors linking Steven Stamkos to Detroit picked up steam around free agency, but the latest insider chatter has put a damper on that idea. Multiple NHL voices, including Elliotte Friedman and David Pagnotta, have pushed back on the notion that the Red Wings were seriously in the mix, while also noting that the veteran center ultimately landed in Nashville instead.
For a fan base already used to parsing every whisper around Steve Yzerman, it is another reminder that a lot of the offseason buzz can be more noise than substance. It also comes against a backdrop of earlier speculation involving Dylan Larkin and Simon Edvinsson, which has only made the need for clarity around Detroit's plans even sharper as the front office continues to navigate the market. Dylan Larkin's Return Doesn't Solve Detroit's Biggest Problem
Dylan Larkin was back in the lineup for the Red Wings on Sunday after sitting out the previous two games with an upper-body injury, and his presence gave Detroit a much-needed lift on the ice. The captain made an immediate impact in his season debut against Ottawa, scoring his first goal of the year while his teammates made a point of showing support around him throughout the night.
Still, the bigger issue hanging over the Wings did not go away with one strong return. Larkin has already asked to leave Detroit, and the reaction from the crowd was a reminder that the relationship between the player and the fan base is strained. Even after helping the team to a win, he reiterated that he still wants out, leaving Detroit to sort through a situation that goes well beyond one game. [Read more 🡒]
