Red Wings Fans Should Brace For A New Twist In The Larkin Standoff

With Dylan Larkin's current standoff with the Detroit Red Wings, changes to his trade list could soon unlock new possibilities and alter his professional trajectory.

Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman said Saturday night that Dylan Larkin’s trade list may not stay the same for long.

On Sportsnet’s Saturday Headlines, Friedman said there’s a real chance the list changes in the next couple of days.

"I think over the next 24-48 hours it's possible we see that trade list altered."

He expanded on that point by naming a few teams that seem especially unlikely to be involved.

"I think over the next 24-48 hours, it’s possible we see [Larkin’s] trade list altered. I think some teams like Florida and Vegas, even Colorado, it’s very hard to see anything like that happening, if not impossible, so I do think it’s possible that Larkin may take some teams off or possibly even add some teams on,” Friedman reported on Sportsnet’s Saturday Headlines.

That language matters. Friedman kept circling back to “possible,” which leaves plenty of room for the situation to shift without locking anything in.

The Red Wings suspended Larkin without pay earlier this week after he told the team he would not play for them again. Interim GM Shawn Horcoff eventually made it official that Larkin is done in Detroit. Since the suspension began, Larkin has already lost more than $141K, with the reported cost sitting at about $41K per day.

The timing also lines up with a small roster move in Detroit. The Red Wings announced Sunday morning that John Leonard has been recalled from Grand Rapids. Detroit is set to face the Panthers tomorrow night.

Larkin’s current list includes 10 teams, but the fit is complicated. Several of the clubs on it are either tight against the cap or short on the kind of assets Detroit would want back for a 2C on a very team-friendly contract. Minnesota is the name drawing the most attention, and the Wild reportedly want him badly, but the offer on the table is said to fall short.

There have also been rumors about Montreal’s interest in Larkin, possibly even stronger interest than Minnesota’s, but the Canadiens are not on his list. A deal with Montreal would likely bring Detroit a “juicier” return.

For now, though, the key point is that the list may not be static. Friedman suggested Larkin could take teams off it, or even add more.

If he does expand it, that would speed things up. If he trims it, the market gets narrower.

Either way, the Red Wings do not appear to be in a rush. Horcoff has the leverage to wait, and Detroit has no obligation to move Larkin until the return makes sense.

Red Wings Icon Takes Rare Public Stand In Russia Hockey Debate

Nicklas Lidstrom has spent years as one of the most respected voices in hockey, and now the Red Wings vice president of hockey operations and Swedish Hockey Federation advisor has taken a rare public position on one of the sports most sensitive issues. In the wake of the International Court of Arbitration for Sport annulling the IIHFs ban on Russia, Lidstrom has thrown his support behind the idea of boycotting international events if Russia is allowed back into the competition mix.

The IIHF is expected to appeal the ruling, which keeps the issue very much alive across the hockey world. Adding another layer to the debate is Viacheslav Fetisov, Lidstroms former teammate and now a member of the Russian State Duma, who wants Russia returned to international play but only under its own national symbols rather than as neutral athletes. Red Wings Add A Scoring Option As Lineup Questions Keep Growing

With the Red Wings still sorting through their lineup picture, John Leonard is getting another NHL look after being recalled from AHL Grand Rapids. The winger will join Detroit on its upcoming road trip in Florida, giving the club an extra scoring option at a time when it could use some stability and a little more finish in the forward group.

Leonard has been productive for the Griffins early this season, scoring five goals in six games, and he was also Grand Rapids leading goal scorer a year ago. Detroit clearly sees enough there to keep him in the mix, especially after signing him to a one-year extension, but this call-up is also a chance for Leonard to show he can carry that offense into the NHL picture. Red Wings Risk A Costly Simon Edvinsson Standoff As Pressure Builds

Simon Edvinssons situation has become one of the most awkward unresolved items around the Red Wings, with the 23-year-old defenseman still unsigned as an unrestricted free agent and the calendar now working against both sides. The December 1 deadline is looming, and if he does not sign by then, he would be ineligible to play in the NHL for the 2026-27 season. For a player who has not been with the club since training camp because of a contract dispute, the stalemate has already lingered long enough to become a real distraction.

Interest around the league has only added to the pressure, with the San Jose Sharks among the teams monitoring the situation and several others believed to be involved. Detroit has already turned away at least one serious trade offer, which suggests the front office is not eager to move him lightly even as the relationship remains strained. The longer this stretches on, the more it looks like a test of patience and leverage, with the Red Wings trying to protect their asset while Edvinssons future in Detroit stays very much in doubt.
