The Red Wings may have found another late-round swing worth watching.
After Emmitt Finnie beat long odds and carved out NHL games as a seventh-round pick, Detroit has another name to track in Myles Brosnan. It’s far too soon to put a real label on him, but the early signs are turning heads. He looked encouraging at the NHL Rookie Tournament, then took a nice first step in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League on Friday night by scoring in his debut.
Brosnan’s goal helped Moncton edge Charlottetown 4-3, and he was named the game’s No. 1 star. For a player who spent last season in high school hockey, that’s a strong opening statement.
He’s listed at 6-foot and close to 200 pounds, and the appeal is pretty clear: there’s some size there, and there’s upside if the rest of the game keeps coming along. He also has a commitment to play at Harvard next season, so this is still very much the early part of the journey.
Detroit is hoping the next stop in that development comes under Moncton coach Gardiner MacDougall, whose reputation for getting more out of his players is well established.
Grand Rapids Griffins coach Dan Watson gave a simple read on Brosnan during the NHL Prospects Tournament:
“He’s a good skater - he moves well on the ice,” Watson said. “He’s a young guy who’s just learning right now.
But what we have noticed is, he’s around the net, hard in the corners. He’s hard.
That’s a good start for him.”
