Red Wings Face An Ugly Dylan Larkin Standoff

Star center Dylan Larkin's ongoing trade saga intensifies as he opts to sit out games until the Red Wings finalize a move.

Dylan Larkin’s situation with the Red Wings appears to be moving toward a standstill on the ice and a race to the trade market off it.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Larkin will not suit up for Detroit again until the team trades him, and the Red Wings are expected to issue a statement on the matter. The report follows a messy stretch that began when Larkin asked for a trade early in the NHL offseason and no deal came together. He still reported to training camp, but the relationship has been visibly strained since then.

Detroit already made one major move in response by stripping Larkin of the captaincy. Then came the home opener, where fans loudly booed him during introductions.

Larkin had previously been linked to a limited group of teams he would accept in a trade. Reports said the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers were among the clubs he would consider.

Now, Red Wings reporter Helene St. James says that list has grown to 10 teams.

No Canadian teams are on it, and the Michigan native is said to want a landing spot with a realistic shot at a Stanley Cup.

Larkin is in his 12th season with the Red Wings and has logged two goals and four assists through the first 10 games of the year. With trade conversations now reportedly intensifying, Detroit has reason to be careful about protecting one of its biggest assets from injury before a deal is completed.

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic added another layer to the story, reporting that Larkin believes he has given the organization “ample” time to find a trade partner. LeBrun said there were talks in the last 24 hours between Larkin’s camp and the Red Wings, both on Wednesday night and again Thursday morning, and that the message from Larkin’s agents was that he has waited since his trade request in May for the team to get something done.

LeBrun also reported that both sides agreed to this approach and that the Red Wings will circle back on possible trade partners.

Red Wings Bottom-Six Problem Is Forcing A Jesse Kiiskinen Conversation

The early-season math has already started to pressure Detroits forward group, and the biggest concern is down the lineup. At 5-4-3 with a minus-4 goal differential, the Red Wings have been just good enough to stay in the mix, but their bottom six has not pulled its weight, with only 11 points combined from that part of the roster. That kind of production usually forces a front office to start looking for answers beyond the NHL club, especially when there is a younger option in the system already making noise.

Jesse Kiiskinen has put himself into that conversation with his strong start in the AHL, giving Detroit a potential spark if it decides the lineup needs a shake-up. The challenge is that any move up front will not happen in a vacuum, because the Red Wings are also dealing with injured players working their way back into the picture. That means the question is not just whether Kiiskinen deserves a look, but how the team would make room if it decides the bottom-six needs a jolt. [Read more 🡒]

Lightning Suddenly Face Another Lineup Test Up Front

The lineup shuffle around the Red Wings keeps rolling, and this time it is giving Detroit a little more reason to look ahead. Marco Kasper and Mason Appleton are both trending toward returns in a couple of weeks after injuries that have kept them out since the season opener and second game, respectively, while the blue line took another hit with Albert Johansson now sidelined.

For a team trying to keep its depth intact, the timing matters because the East keeps asking for healthy bodies every night. The Red Wings have already had to manage injuries at both ends of the lineup, and even with some help potentially coming soon, there is still another absence to sort through before the next game and beyond. Red Wings Face Bigger Simon Edvinsson Decision Than Fans Expected

The Red Wings offseason business has stretched deeper into the calendar than they probably wanted, with Simon Edvinsson still unsigned as a restricted free agent and the market beginning to take shape around him. San Jose is among the teams showing interest in the young defenseman, which only adds to the pressure on Detroit to sort out its plans for a player the organization views as part of its future blue line.

For Detroit, the timing matters because this is no longer just a paperwork item tucked away for later. Edvinssons next contract is starting to draw attention beyond the Red Wings own building, and the longer it lingers, the more it becomes a question of leverage, fit and how aggressively the club wants to protect one of its most promising defensemen from a wider bidding picture.
