The Red Wings are about to find out whether four preseason games is enough to get everyone where they need to be.
The NHL’s shortened exhibition slate starts Monday, and for Detroit that means a quick sprint before the regular season arrives. There’s no long ramp-up this time. Just four chances to shake off the rust, sort out timing and get into game mode before the opener at Little Caesars Arena against the New York Rangers six days after the preseason ends.
Andrew Copp sounds plenty comfortable with the new setup.
“Yeah, I mean, eight [preseason games] was egregious, to be honest,” Copp said. “I think four is kind of a sweet spot.
“You come in, you get to work right away. There’s no dilly-dallying around.
There’s no extra stuff going on. We got to get right to the point.”
Detroit opens Tuesday at Pittsburgh, then returns home for games against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday and Columbus on Saturday. That’s the whole runway.
For Copp, the value of those games is obvious. It’s less about racking up reps and more about getting the details back in sync.
“Obviously, these preseason games will be huge to kind of get your feet under you and get your timing down and then get right into it,” Copp said. “You just got to take advantage of the chances you get to bump and grind a little bit, find your timing.
“Preseason games, like I said, will be huge to get the timing off the bench, the changes, your shift cadence a little bit, and then it’s go time.”
Todd McLellan, though, is looking at the bigger picture. Coaches are wired to wonder what a change like this means once the games start counting, and he’s not pretending four exhibitions answers every question.
“I know we always used to talk about it that at about the 10-game mark, the league becomes the league,” McLellan said. “But that was when we played eight or nine exhibition games. So I haven’t even thought about that.
“Is it going to be the 10-game mark where the veterans all find their stride, and they’re really clicking? Or could it be later?
Can it be earlier? I don’t know.”
Goaltending may be the biggest unknown of all. John Gibson and Daniil Tarasov will each get five periods before the real thing begins, and McLellan didn’t sugarcoat his concern.
“I don’t know if it’s enough,” McLellan frankly admitted. He compared the situation to pitchers in spring training.
“You think about pitching in spring training, like how many times they get to throw the ball and throw the ball and throw the ball and they’re still not ready. In April, it sometimes takes into May for them to really find their groove.
“I hope that’s not the case with our goaltending. If it is with the other teams, we’ll take that.
But Gibby’s a veteran. I think he knows what he needs.
Tarasov’s worked hard all summer long, so hopefully they’ve got what they need.”
Tarasov, for his part, isn’t sweating the short window. He pointed to all the work that’s already been done before the preseason even arrives.
“Yeah, I mean, we’ve been practicing a long time,” Tarasov said. “It started in July, so I got a lot of shots from that time. And also, yeah, absolutely, it’s not a lot of actual games, but we got scrimmages and stuff, so you can simulate some unpredictable stuff out there on the ice.
“Any minutes, any preseason games are gonna help prepare for a season.”
