Red Wings Face A Franchise-Altering Dylan Larkin Question

With the Panthers eyeing Dylan Larkin to address their injury woes, can the Red Wings strike a deal that boosts their own roster while leveraging Florida's urgency and cap space?

The Florida Panthers’ injury situation could open the door for the Detroit Red Wings to finally find a landing spot for Dylan Larkin.

With Brad Marchand and Alexsander Barkov both out long-term, Florida would have $15.25 million in cap space if both players are placed on LTIR. That gives the Panthers room to chase Larkin, who carries an $8.7 million cap hit. The bigger question is what the Red Wings would actually get back, and whether Florida would be willing to pay the price.

A deal built around Larkin would force the Panthers to give up real pieces. Anton Lundell and Eetu Luostarinen are the most obvious names because neither has a no-movement or trade clause.

Either player would make sense as part of a return for a true number one center, but both are also important to Florida’s roster. Beyond them, the Panthers’ pool of young assets is thin, with Sandis Vilmanis standing out as one of the few notable options at 22.

That’s where the draft picks come in. Florida’s earliest tradable first-round pick is 2031, but the club does have four second-rounders and three third-rounders. To make a Larkin deal work, it would likely take three or four of those picks getting included.

From Detroit’s side, the ideal package would be Lundell and Luostarinen plus as many picks as possible - even something like two seconds and two thirds. That would give the Red Wings two top-six forwards along with future assets they could potentially flip later if they start trending upward.

There’s also the cap math to consider once Barkov and Marchand return. If Florida moved both Lundell and Luostarinen, it would only need to clear $700,000 to fit Larkin under the cap. And if the Panthers agreed to send four picks, Detroit might be asked to retain $1.5-2 million per season to help make the numbers work.

It’s not a simple fit, but the Panthers are the club under the tighter squeeze right now. If Florida wants a top-line center, Larkin is the name that stands out. The price would be heavy, but he brings the profile of a true number one down the middle.

For the Red Wings, landing a return like that could help reshape the roster without tipping into a full rebuild. It would also create a pathway to move Simon Edvinsson and keep the retool moving forward.

Red Wings Suddenly Have A Goalie Question They Did Not Expect

A year after arriving from Czechia as an undrafted free agent, Michal Postava is suddenly looking like more than organizational depth for the Red Wings. Signed in June 2025 after his time with HC Kometa Brno, the 24-year-old spent the 2025-26 season backing up Sebastian Cossa in Grand Rapids, but he has opened the new season strong enough to move into the starters net for the Griffins, who sit atop the Central Division.

For Detroit, that kind of development is exactly the sort of surprise that can reshape the goalie picture quickly. Postavas rise gives the organization another young option to track closely, especially with Grand Rapids playing well and the crease becoming a more interesting part of the pipeline than it seemed just a few months ago. Red Wings May Be Stalling Two Young Players They Need Most

Detroits pipeline has looked encouraging in spots this season, with five Griffins prospects getting NHL looks and a few of them quickly finding their footing. Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, William Wallinder and Anton Johansson have each managed to turn opportunity into something more meaningful, which is exactly the kind of progress the organization wants to see as it keeps trying to build a stronger next wave of talent.

The trickier part is figuring out what to do with Axel Sandin-Pellikka and Nate Danielson, two young players the Red Wings need to become more than just depth options. Both have had a harder time carving out real NHL influence, and the development case for each could point back to Grand Rapids for more seasoning before Detroit asks them to carry more of the load. Red Wings Suddenly Have A Center Question Fans Cant Ignore

The Red Wings are still sorting through what their center depth should look like, and the discussion has only grown more interesting as trade chatter around the roster keeps circling. Detroit is weighing whether to move Simon Edvinsson and Dylan Larkin, a sign that the front office is at least thinking broadly about how to reshape the middle of the ice while also keeping an eye on the bigger market for help at center.

If Edvinsson becomes part of a deal, the return could determine how aggressive Detroit is in addressing the position, and Shawn Horcoffs role in the ask could matter in more ways than one. The list of possible targets is already familiar to anyone following the draft-and-trade landscape, with names like Caleb Desnoyers, Berkly Catton, James Hagens, Dalibor Dvorsky and Kent Johnson all in the mix, which leaves the Wings with options but not necessarily answers just yet.
