With the regular season just two days away for the Detroit Red Wings, Simon Edvinsson is back in Sweden.
The unsigned defenseman, still a restricted free agent, has returned to his native country and is training with Frolunda, according to Aftonbladet. That means one of Detroit’s most important young blue-liners is not currently with the club as the puck draw near on Friday evening.
Edvinsson did report to training camp despite not having an NHL contract, and he skated with the rest of his teammates during non-scrimmage drills. Earlier this month, he explained why he made the trip to Detroit even without a deal.
"I don't see the reason for me to sit at home, to be honest," Edvinsson said earlier this month. "I think I would be stressed if I were back in Sweden now and I saw everybody else practicing. We are going into a new season where it's important that everybody is linked together."
"I don't know the expression, but everybody needs to be on the same page, and that was my reasoning to come over here," he continued.
On Wednesday, Red Wings interim GM Shawn Horcoff addressed the situation in a statement.
“As of today, Simon is not practicing with the team. The organization will continue conversations with Simon and his representatives.”
The holdout leaves Detroit waiting on a player it clearly values highly. Edvinsson, the club’s first-round pick and sixth overall selection in the 2021 NHL Draft, has grown into Detroit’s second-best defenseman behind Moritz Seider.
The contract standoff appears to come down to term. Reports have indicated the Red Wings are interested in a bridge-style deal, while Edvinsson and his camp would prefer something longer.
Whatever the eventual agreement looks like, the timing is rough for Detroit. With opening night now just over 48 hours away, the Red Wings are running out of time to settle one of their biggest roster questions.

Chris Ilitchs Red Wings Promises Already Look Shaky
When Chris Ilitch sat down for an interview, he tried to project stability around the Red Wings future, promising contract extensions for Simon Edvinsson and Alex DeBrincat while also saying the organizations hockey leaders had the freedom to run the team. It was the kind of message meant to calm a restless fan base and reinforce that the front office had a plan, even as frustration around the franchise has continued to build.
More than two weeks later, the follow-through has not matched the talk. Edvinsson has yet to sign and is practicing in Sweden, and DeBrincat also remains without an extension, leaving Ilitchs comments looking premature at best. Add in the broader unease around the teams direction and the poor results that have fed it, and the latest round of promises has only sharpened the scrutiny on how much control and clarity the Red Wings actually have. Red Wings Just Put A Familiar Voice In A Bigger Prospect Role
Dan Cleary is moving into a larger role inside the Red Wings organization, shifting from assistant director of player development to a new spot with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. He has been a familiar presence around the affiliate in recent seasons, so this is less a hard reset than a promotion for someone already familiar with the people and the pipeline.
The move gives the Griffins a steady voice at a time when the organization is reshuffling its front office, and it puts Cleary in a position where communication with young players will matter even more. He said he wants to keep the lines open and help players reach their goals, a fitting mandate for a team that sits right on the edge between prospect development and the Red Wings' next wave. Red Wings Opening Night Suddenly Hinges On Simon Edvinsson
Simon Edvinsson has spent the final stretch before the Red Wings' season opener back in familiar surroundings, practicing in Sweden with Frlunda HC while still waiting on a contract from Detroit. The top young defenseman took part in training camp without a deal, a notable wrinkle for a player who became a meaningful part of the blue line last season and figured to be part of the conversation again as the schedule turns over.
The timing leaves Detroit in an awkward spot just days before opening night, with its defensive plans still tied to a negotiation that has yet to be finished. Edvinsson is preparing abroad while the Red Wings sort through the last details, and until something is finalized, his status for the opener against the Rangers remains unsettled. [Read more 🡒]
