Red Wings Contract Trouble Now Points Back To Yzerman

Tensions rise within the Detroit Red Wings as insider Elliotte Friedman sheds light on Steve Yzerman's hardline negotiation tactics, highlighting the growing discord surrounding Simon Edvinsson's unresolved contract.

The Simon Edvinsson situation has turned into a mess for the Detroit Red Wings, and Elliotte Friedman isn’t placing the blame in just one spot.

On the latest edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Friedman pointed directly at Steve Yzerman while discussing Edvinsson’s preference to be traded. In Friedman’s view, the issues that have piled up in Detroit trace back to the way Yzerman handled contract talks with the team’s younger players.

“I reported that their (Red Wings) preference was a bridge. That was certainly the case when Yzerman was still in charge. And the one thing is there’s a lot of talk about Detroit doesn’t want to pay anyone.”

Friedman said Yzerman believed too much money was being pushed toward young players too early, and that stance shaped the negotiations.

“He thought the money for the young players was too much too quickly. And he negotiated hard.”

That hardline approach, Friedman said, showed up across multiple deals, not just Edvinsson’s.

“He negotiated hard with Seider… He negotiated hard with Raymond. He negotiated hard with Larkin, even in Larkin’s deal that led up to unrestricted free agency where he extended. And he negotiated hard with Edvinsson.”

Friedman returned to the same point later in the discussion, stressing how strongly Yzerman felt about the timing of those contracts.

“When Yzerman was in charge, he, one of the things he strongly felt was it was too much too soon for them, and he fought them hard.”

The fallout has already been felt with Larkin, and Friedman’s comments suggest the same pattern helped create the current Edvinsson standoff.

Still, this isn’t being laid entirely at Yzerman’s feet. The Red Wings organization also dragged its feet in sorting out the front office situation, and that delay left the whole matter hanging in the air for far too long. Even with Shawn Horcoff now running things on an interim basis, the club never moved quickly enough to settle the issue during the summer.

That slow rollout matters here. Had the Red Wings named Horcoff months ago, an Edvinsson extension may already be done. Instead, the uncertainty kept building, and the situation has now reached the point where a trade feels like the most realistic path.

Even then, there’s no clean promise that this gets resolved quickly. It could still drag on and become a distraction that hangs over the Red Wings’ season.

For now, the Edvinsson and Larkin situations look tied to Yzerman’s approach, but the organization as a whole has helped create the larger debacle. The best-case scenario is still the simplest one: a resolution that leaves everyone satisfied.

Oilers Face One Costly Question In Any Lucas Raymond Pursuit

Detroits already uneasy forward picture has only become more complicated, with captain Dylan Larkin and defenseman Simon Edvinsson both tied to trade-request chatter and the organization still trying to sort out where it goes from here. In that kind of climate, even a core winger like Lucas Raymond can get pulled into the conversation, especially if the Red Wings decide a broader rebuild means listening on players who still carry real value around the league.

Edmonton has come up as a possible fit because the Oilers are always hunting for impact talent, and Raymonds age and skill set make him the kind of name that naturally stirs up speculation. The tricky part is finding a package that makes Detroit even pause, which is why any potential deal starts to feel like a bigger test of direction than a simple hockey transaction. The framework being floated is built around a sizable return, but the real question is whether the Red Wings would ever be willing to move a player who could still be part of their next core. Dylan Larkins Red Wings Future Suddenly Feels Far Less Secure

A wave of uncertainty has followed several members of the recent U.S. Olympic hockey team, with names like Brady Tkachuk, Connor Hellebuyck, Zach Werenski and Quinn Hughes surfacing in trade buzz or future questions. For Detroit fans, the most unsettling piece of that list is Dylan Larkin, whose standing with the Red Wings has suddenly become a conversation instead of a given, even if the exact reasons behind these shifting situations are still being sorted through.

There are different theories for why some of these players are looking around or have complicated futures, from wanting to play closer to family to simply searching for a better team fit. What is not clear is whether the Olympic gold run itself changed anything in the short term, and for Detroit the real intrigue is what comes next for a captain whose future no longer feels as settled as it once did. DeBrincat Just Put Detroit's Biggest Contract Decision Into Focus

Alex DeBrincats situation has become one of the clearest contract storylines hanging over Detroit as the season gets underway. The winger is in the final year of his deal, and with extension talks now on the table, the Red Wings are being forced to weigh how aggressively they want to secure a core scorer before the market and the season move any further.

The timing matters because Detroit has spent recent years trying to build something stable enough to take the next step, and DeBrincat sits right at the center of that effort. The question now is less about whether he fits than how far the Red Wings are willing to go to keep him, with the answer likely to shape how the front office approaches the rest of its business.
