Red Wings Add A Scoring Option As Lineup Questions Keep Growing

Promising scorer John Leonard has been called up to the Detroit Red Wings, poised to strengthen their offensive lineup ahead of critical matchups in Florida.

Quietly, John Leonard has been piling up goals for the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins again, and the Detroit Red Wings have decided it’s time to bring that production upstairs.

Detroit is recalling the left-winger for its Florida road trip, which includes games against the Florida Panthers on Monday and the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday.

Leonard has been on a scoring run in Grand Rapids to start the season. He has five goals in six games, tying Sheldon Dries for second on the team. Dries is also currently with the Red Wings.

That kind of finish has become Leonard’s calling card. Last season, he paced the Griffins with 33 goals in just 47 AHL games and earned a spot on the AHL Second All-Star Team.

Over the past two seasons, including the playoffs, he has scored 80 goals. He also set a career high with 36 goals for the AHL Charlotte Checkers in 2024-25.

“I think I just try to put myself in good spots (to score),” Leonard said.

The 28-year-old already got a look with Detroit last season, appearing in 11 games and producing two goals and two assists. When he was used among the team’s top-six forwards, he showed some real touch and creativity.

“He can make an impact on the game with his speed,” Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said. “But now his shot and his creativity offensively, they’re coming to the forefront as well.”

Detroit also signed Leonard to a one-year contract extension that carries an AAV of $850,000 at the NHL level.

His recall pushes the Red Wings to the NHL maximum of 23 players. The roster now breaks down to two goalies, eight defensemen, and 13 forwards, which is the kind of balance the franchise has typically carried.

Even with Leonard back in the mix, scoring depth is still a concern. Six forwards on the active roster have one goal or fewer this season, and Dries, Carter Mazur, and Nate Danielson are all still looking for their first goal.

The injury list is part of the picture too. Forwards Marco Kasper and Mason Appleton remain about two weeks away from returning.

Red Wings Icon Takes Rare Public Stand In Russia Hockey Debate

Nicklas Lidstrom has spent years as one of the most respected voices in hockey, and now the Red Wings vice president of hockey operations and Swedish Hockey Federation advisor has taken a rare public position on one of the sports most sensitive issues. In the wake of the International Court of Arbitration for Sport annulling the IIHFs ban on Russia, Lidstrom has thrown his support behind the idea of boycotting international events if Russia is allowed back into the competition mix.

The IIHF is expected to appeal the ruling, which keeps the issue very much alive across the hockey world. Adding another layer to the debate is Viacheslav Fetisov, Lidstroms former teammate and now a member of the Russian State Duma, who wants Russia returned to international play but only under its own national symbols rather than as neutral athletes. Red Wings Fans Should Brace For A New Twist In The Larkin Standoff

Dylan Larkins situation has moved well beyond a standard contract dispute, and the latest wrinkle only adds to the uncertainty around where this ends for Detroit. Elliotte Friedman reported that the Red Wings captains approved trade list could change within the next 24 to 48 hours, a detail that matters because Detroit has already suspended him without pay after Larkin said he would not play for the club again.

For the Red Wings, the practical challenge is sorting through a trade market that is already complicated by cap realities and the kinds of assets other teams would have to send back. Larkins current list includes 10 teams, but not every name on it is a realistic fit, which leaves Detroit navigating a moving target while the clock keeps ticking on one of the franchises most uncomfortable storylines in years. Red Wings Risk A Costly Simon Edvinsson Standoff As Pressure Builds

Simon Edvinssons situation has become one of the most awkward unresolved items around the Red Wings, with the 23-year-old defenseman still unsigned as an unrestricted free agent and the calendar now working against both sides. The December 1 deadline is looming, and if he does not sign by then, he would be ineligible to play in the NHL for the 2026-27 season. For a player who has not been with the club since training camp because of a contract dispute, the stalemate has already lingered long enough to become a real distraction.

Interest around the league has only added to the pressure, with the San Jose Sharks among the teams monitoring the situation and several others believed to be involved. Detroit has already turned away at least one serious trade offer, which suggests the front office is not eager to move him lightly even as the relationship remains strained. The longer this stretches on, the more it looks like a test of patience and leverage, with the Red Wings trying to protect their asset while Edvinssons future in Detroit stays very much in doubt.
