Red Wings 2027 Mock Draft Sparks A Familiar Center Debate

The Detroit Red Wings are eyeing promising center Gunnar Conboy in a speculative 2027 NHL Draft, as they look to fill potential roster gaps with emerging talent.

The Red Wings landed a center in The Athletic’s way-too-early 2027 mock draft, and it’s Green Bay’s Gunnar Conboy at No. 7.

Conboy, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound pivot, put together a strong first season with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League. In 32 games, he scored 12 goals and added nine assists for 21 points, while piling up 83 penalty minutes.

Corey Pronman called him out as a player who made a real impression in junior.

"Conboy had a great first season in junior," The Athletic's Corey Pronman wrote. "He’s a tall center who’s highly athletic and physical, showing a brand of hockey that will excite evaluators.

"The pure skill and offense in his game are minor questions, but as of now, he looks good enough to be a significant NHL prospect."

Conboy is set to go back to the Gamblers this season. Green Bay is coached by former Michigan Tech forward Patrick McCadden. After that, Conboy is committed to play at the University of Minnesota in 2027-28.

The mock draft has the Red Wings sliding to seventh-worst in the league, or 25th overall, based on the team’s future odds with or without captain Dylan Larkin. Detroit finished 16th overall and missed the playoffs last season.

At the top of the board, The Athletic has the Calgary Flames taking Landon DuPont first overall. The 6-foot, 190-pound defenseman is already being billed as the draft’s early consensus No. 1 prospect and is committed to the University of Michigan after two seasons with the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League.

The first round projection is center-heavy, too. Five of The Athletic’s top seven players are centers, including Sammy Nelson, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound forward who posted 54 points in 58 games with USA Hockey’s NTDP U18s last year. Nelson will play at Notre Dame this year.

Here’s how The Athletic’s top 10 and projected order shake out:

  1. Calgary: Landon DuPont, RHD, Michigan (NCAA)
  2. Vancouver: Alexis Joseph, C, Saint John (QMJHL)
  3. Chicago: Nazar Privalov, LW, CSKA (MHL)
  4. Seattle: Milan Sundström, C, MoDo (Sweden Jr.)
  5. Nashville: Jonah Neuenschwander, C, Biel-Bienne (NL)
  6. St.

Louis: Sammy Nelson, C, U.S. NTDP (USHL)

  1. Detroit: Gunnar Conboy, C, Green Bay (USHL)
  2. N.Y. Rangers: Timothy Kazda, RW, Chicago (USHL)
  3. N.Y. Islanders: Noah Davidson, LW, Medicine Hat (WHL)

Red Wings Still Have One Franchise Defining Larkin Decision Looming

The Red Wings have spent the offseason reshaping the roster with three new NHL additions, but the biggest roster question still hanging over 2026-27 is far less about the newcomers than about the captain. Detroit is looking at multiple lineup paths as it tries to map out what the next version of the team could look like, and Dylan Larkin sits at the center of every one of them.

If Larkin stays, the club can keep building around a familiar core and sort through how the rest of the forward group fits around him. If the situation turns in a different direction, the conversation shifts from lineup construction to asset management, with management signaling it would want NHL players back rather than a package built mostly on futures. Either way, this is the kind of decision that can define not just a season, but the shape of the franchise itself. [Read more 🡒]

Patrick Kane Could Shape Everything About Detroits Offseason

Patrick Kanes future has become one of the quieter but more important storylines hanging over Detroits offseason. The 37-year-old winger is still without a contract for next season even though the Red Wings have a standing offer out there, and his situation carries more weight than a typical free-agent decision because of how much scoring touch he brought to the lineup and how thin the margin already is for a team trying to keep its core intact.

The uncertainty around Kane also feeds into bigger questions about how Detroit wants to manage its roster from here. If he moves on, the conversation does not stop with one veteran scorer, because Alex DeBrincats place in the long-term picture could be affected as well, and the Red Wings are already trying to balance retention, depth and stability while building toward next season. For a team that needs answers, Kanes decision may end up shaping several of them. [Read more 🡒]

Red Wings Pressure Is Building As Edvinsson Wait Drags On

As other young defensemen around the league lock in long-term extensions, Simon Edvinssons contract talks have become one of the quieter but more important storylines hanging over Detroit. The Red Wings have not made a significant roster move since the start of free agency, which has only sharpened the focus on what comes next for a team still trying to sort out its blue line and overall direction.

Patrick Kane remains unsigned, Claude Giroux is reportedly staying in Ottawa, and the Flyers record offer sheet for Leo Carlsson has added another layer of noise to an already restless market. For Detroit, the Edvinsson situation is now part of a larger offseason picture that still feels unfinished, with the club waiting on several fronts before the roster starts to look settled.
