In the world of hockey, friendships often transcend the fierce competition on the ice, and that’s certainly the case with Detroit Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond and Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin. These two have shared a bond for years, rooted in their hometown and summers spent training together.
Raymond reflects on their relationship fondly: “Living in the same hometown, working out summers together, hanging out. He’s an unbelievable guy, an unbelievable hockey player.”
Dahlin, the top pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, and Raymond, chosen fourth overall by Detroit in 2020, have been part of Sweden’s hockey legacy through Vastra Frolunda. Despite their close ties, they rarely shared ice time due to their age difference, managing just one game together with Vastra Frolunda’s junior club in 2017-18.
“It was always almost like he went up a step, and then I went up a step,” Raymond explained. “So we never really played with each other.”
Their paths crossed again at the Winter Olympics, where they roomed together in the Olympic Village. Raymond recalls the experience warmly, “We had a great time.
He was a great roommate. I think he probably had more complaints about me than I have about him, but no, we had a great time.”
As the Red Wings gear up to face the Atlantic Division-leading Sabres, Raymond is focused on securing crucial points for Detroit’s playoff hopes. However, he can’t help but feel a sense of joy for his friend Dahlin, who’s faced significant challenges both on and off the ice.
The Sabres, with a 12-year playoff drought, have been in a similar boat to the Red Wings, who are nine years without postseason play. Yet, Dahlin’s personal journey adds another layer to his story. His fiancée, Carolina Matovac, underwent an emergency heart transplant last summer and recently attended her first Sabres game since her recovery.
“It’s hard not to root for the guy, even though the team he’s playing for is in our division,” Raymond admits. “But he’s a good friend of mine, and obviously, everything that he’s gone through with his fiancée, it’s been incredible and inspiring to see. So very happy for them.”
In the end, the camaraderie and mutual respect between Raymond and Dahlin underscore the human side of sports, where friendships and personal triumphs often shine as brightly as any victory on the scoreboard.
