The Detroit Lions have spent too much time patching holes in their secondary, and the latest injury situation only sharpens the need for help. Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch are expected to miss a large chunk of the 2026 season, and with the Terrion Arnold situation now in the mix, Detroit is looking at a back end that needs more certainty.
That’s why Christian Gonzalez stands out as the kind of swing worth making.
The New England Patriots cornerback still hasn’t reached a new contract agreement with the team, and his frustration is growing. With the regular season approaching, the timing could line up for a team to step in, and CBS Sports listed the Lions as one of the top landing spots if Gonzalez is moved.
Detroit’s current 53-man roster shows D.J. Reed and Keith Abney II as the starting cornerbacks, with Roger McCreary penciled in as the starting nickleback.
Ennis Rakestraw Jr. could also be in position to start. Abney is a rookie from Arizona State and a fifth-round pick, so the Lions clearly weren’t planning on leaning on him this early.
Even with one of the easiest schedules in the league, the Lions can’t assume the secondary will hold up while Joseph and Branch are out. That’s especially true if Branch and Joseph are gone for an extended stretch, with Joseph’s case carrying the added uncertainty of “if ever.” A trade for a true top-end corner could change the shape of the defense fast.
Gonzalez already has the résumé to justify that kind of move. In 2025, he earned his first Pro Bowl selection after posting 69 tackles, ten pass deflections and one tackle for loss in 14 games.
He didn’t record an interception, but quarterbacks also largely avoided him. In Super Bowl LX, Gonzalez matched his passes defended total with the number of completions he allowed, three, while covering offensive player of the year Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
Detroit has a roster built around some of the NFL’s best young talent on both sides of the ball, but the defense still needs help in the places that matter most. The Lions allowed more passing yards than six NFC teams last season and still stayed in the playoff race. If they want to get back to the NFC championship, a healthier and more dangerous secondary is a must, and Gonzalez would be one of the biggest upgrades they could land.
The cost would not be small. A deal would likely start with at least one first-round pick.
But in this kind of pursuit, the old “(expletive) them picks” logic applies. If Gonzalez becomes available, Detroit should be ready to push hard.
