Detroit Red Wings End Skid with Dominant Win Over Flames
The Detroit Red Wings snapped their three-game winless streak in style, delivering a 5-2 victory against the Calgary Flames at Little Caesars Arena. The second period saw the Red Wings explode with four goals, setting the tone for the rest of the game.
Patrick Kane was the star of the night, scoring twice in the second period, marking his second multi-goal game and tenth multi-point performance of the season. "The focus is about getting the job done in here and not focusing on anybody else," Kane said.
With 14 games left in the season, Kane emphasized the importance of maintaining their momentum. "We have to bring it every night.
A lot of desperation."
In goal, John Gibson was solid, making 25 saves in his 45th start of the season. His performance was crucial in helping Detroit secure their eighth consecutive win against Calgary.
"Every game this time of the year is important," Gibson noted. "We need to start racking up the wins, so tonight was a good start."
The game began with excitement as Joel Farabee nearly put Calgary on the board early, but Gibson's save kept the Flames at bay. The crowd roared with approval when Dominik Shine squared off with Martin Popisil, injecting energy into the arena.
"His forecheck that led to the fight was important," said head coach Todd McLellan. "It brought positive energy and momentum."
Despite a slow start and a 1-0 deficit after Matvei Gridin's assist to Morgan Frost, Detroit came out firing in the second period. Alex DeBrincat connected with Kane, who tied the game with a precise shot, marking his 503rd NHL goal. Shortly after, Emmitt Finnie set up Lucas Raymond, who found Albert Johansson for a go-ahead goal.
Kane wasn't done, as he scored again, assisted by DeBrincat and J.T. Compher, making it 3-1. Although Matt Coronato quickly responded for Calgary, Moritz Seider's power-play goal extended Detroit's lead to 4-2.
In the third period, the Red Wings maintained their aggressive play, capped by Shine's empty-net goal, sealing the 5-2 win. Kane praised the team's approach, highlighting their balanced aggression and smart play.
McLellan was pleased with the team's offensive output and defensive effort, noting, "We scored five goals for the first time in a while and only gave up two. Gibby played a big role in that."
Kane reflected on the victory, acknowledging a challenging road trip but taking pride in their resilience. "Not ideal being down 1-0, but Shiner's big fight got us going."
As the season heats up, Gibson emphasized the importance of staying focused. "Every game’s a new game.
Enjoy it, then get ready for Thursday. It’s too close, but it’s exciting."
The Red Wings are showing they have the grit and determination to make a strong push as the season heads into its final stretch.
