The Detroit Red Wings have faced a rough patch of injuries right after the NHL Trade Deadline, losing key players like Dylan Larkin and Andrew Copp in consecutive games. With forwards Michael Rasmussen and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard also sidelined, Monday's game against the Calgary Flames was crucial for John Gibson and his team.
Despite the setbacks, Detroit stepped up when it mattered most. After conceding the opening goal, the Red Wings took charge of the game. Gibson was a wall in the net, making 25 saves, while Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane lit up the scoreboard with a combined five points, leading to a solid 5-2 victory at home.
Gibson highlighted the importance of the win, saying, “At this time of the year, every game is important, so this was big. We need to start racking up some wins, so this was a good start.”
Kane found the back of the net twice, and DeBrincat was the playmaker with three assists. With Larkin out, these two wingers have been pivotal in keeping the team competitive.
Head coach Todd McLellan expressed his satisfaction, noting, “It was good to see Kane and DeBrincat get rewarded for their elevated play. They’ve been doing it for five or six games now, and we are going to need it.”
This victory catapulted the Red Wings into the top Wild Card spot in the East. The Boston Bruins' overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils gave Detroit a one-point edge in the Wild Card race. They're also tied on points with the Montreal Canadiens for a playoff position in the Atlantic Division.
Looking ahead, Detroit will face the Canadiens on Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena, aiming to solidify their playoff aspirations.
