Edvinsson Standoff Puts Real Pressure On Red Wings Front Office

Simon Edvinsson's contract negotiations with the Red Wings face unexpected hurdles, intensifying speculation over a potential trade.

The Simon Edvinsson situation in Detroit still doesn’t look close to a clean resolution.

Elliotte Friedman said on 32 Thoughts that neither side appears to have moved much from where this negotiation started, despite Shawn Horcoff’s comments in a press conference earlier this month. Friedman said Edvinsson’s current preference is still to be traded to another team, even though he has not filed a formal trade request.

“I think they're a little bit disappointed about how they haven't been able to budge Edvinsson...I think they're a bit surprised, too,” Friedman said in his Red Wings segment. According to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, Edvinsson and interim GM Shawn Horcoff met to discuss further contract terms, but there has not been much of an update since then.

Edvinsson made it public earlier this month that he would prefer to be moved, and the Red Wings have been trying to line up a number that gets him closer to Moritz Seider's $8.55M/year cap hit. The problem, as Friedman noted, is that the salary cap landscape has changed dramatically since that contract was signed.

For now, the result is a stalemate: Edvinsson remains unsigned, and Detroit is still trying to sort out its answer at a key spot on the blue line.

If the Red Wings decide the contract path isn’t going to work, Friedman said the organization is already looking in a very specific direction on the trade market. The focus, he said, is on a young center.

“The one thing I think they are doing is...they're starting to ask about young centers,” Friedman continues. “And maybe even some guys who are top prospects that aren't even in the NHL yet. I had a couple teams tell me on Wednesday that whatever Detroit's planning here, they're looking at young centers.”

That fits the shape of Detroit’s roster, which Friedman’s reporting points to as a team short on young centers. Outside of Emmitt Finnie, an injured Marco Kasper and Nate Danielson, there isn’t much in that pipeline, and the position has become such a glaring need that any potential Dylan Larkin deal would reportedly begin with a young center as the centerpiece.

Even so, Friedman said the Red Wings are still doing their homework while the Edvinsson talks drag on.

“There is some groundwork being done here.”

Time is also becoming a factor. If Edvinsson is going to play in the NHL this season, he needs a contract signed before December 1.

“I think you can say publicly 'we want to sign him' and it's true, but you have to be prepared for reality. If you want to trade him, you've got 40 days or he can't play this year,” Friedman remarks.

Detroit has a little more than a month to get this sorted out. There may be movement behind the scenes, but the finish line is still out of sight. And while Edvinsson’s preferred outcome remains a trade, Friedman also made clear that he still has not formally asked for one.

Red Wings Cruise In Vancouver As A Late Goalie Twist Steals Focus

Lucas Raymond helped set the tone early in Rogers Arena, scoring twice as the Red Wings jumped out to a fast start and rolled past the Canucks 5-2. Detroit looked in control for most of the night, getting the kind of balanced road result that can settle a team in a long trip and give its top players a chance to steer the pace from the opening shift on.

The more unusual part of the evening came in net, where John Gibson exited after two periods because of an eye issue. Michal Postava then stepped in for the third period and made his NHL debut, turning a comfortable win into a night that will be remembered for more than the scoreline as Detroit waits to see how the goalie situation settles after the trip. Red Wings Trade Rumor Just Put Dylan Larkin Fans On Edge

The rumor mill around Dylan Larkin picked up again after reports surfaced that the Red Wings have been scouting the Canadiens, a reminder that even one of the franchises most important players can become part of the leagues endless trade chatter. For Detroit, any whisper involving its captain is bound to grab attention, especially when it comes with another layer of draft-pick and prospect intrigue on the other side of the conversation.

Montreal, according to the reporting, could be positioned to shape any potential talks around a familiar name to Michigan hockey fans, which only adds to the speculation around where this is headed. For now, it remains just that, but the fact that the Red Wings are looking closely at the Canadiens is enough to keep Larkin-watch firmly on the front burner until the picture becomes clearer. Red Wings Finally Get A Road Win But One New Concern Looms

The Red Wings finally came home from Vancouver with a road win, and it was built early. Lucas Raymond scored twice in the first period to give Detroit a quick cushion, William Wallinder picked up his second career goal, and the 5-2 result gave the club a much-needed boost away from home.

John Gibsons night ended before it should have, though, and that changes the feel of an otherwise encouraging win. Michal Postava was pressed into duty after being called up from the Grand Rapids Griffins, and the situation was made trickier by the fact that Daniil Tarasov was already unavailable, leaving Detroit to sort through another goaltending question heading into the next stretch.
