Dylan Larkin's Return Gave The Red Wings Something They Desperately Needed

With Dylan Larkin back in the lineup, the Red Wings clinched their first victory in months, showcasing a revitalized and strategic gameplay against the Ottawa Senators.

Dylan Larkin’s return gave the Red Wings exactly the kind of jolt they needed, and Detroit turned it into its first win of the season.

Back in the lineup for the first time, the former captain helped spark a 5-2 home win over the Ottawa Senators on a night when the Red Wings finally looked more settled. Larkin scored Detroit’s first lead of the season in the first period, and the Wings never gave it back. For a team that had opened its season with two rough outings, this felt like a cleaner, more connected effort.

“It wasn’t always pretty, but we held our ground and we had contributions from a lot of different people in different ways.” head coach Todd McLellan said.

The game started with a quick Ottawa strike from Tim Stutzle just over three minutes in, but Detroit answered almost immediately. Alex DeBrincat tied it a little more than 30 seconds later, then Larkin put the Wings ahead on the power play later in the period. Viktor Arvidsson and DeBrincat were credited with the assists.

McLellan said Larkin’s presence changes the way the lineup fits together.

“I don’t want to say we’re thin down the middle, but Larks is- He slots everybody right… So by having Larks play, it just puts people in the right spots.” McLellan said, “I can tell you on the bench, his teammates were rallying around him. They believe we’re a better team with him than without him.”

Detroit also played a cleaner game than it had in its first two starts, avoiding the unnecessary penalties that had hurt it early. The Red Wings didn’t let Ottawa get comfortable, and they spent the rest of the night protecting and extending the lead instead of trying to climb out of a hole.

“I mean for a hockey player, the best medicine is just to play and to just enjoy it.” Larkin said.

DeBrincat was the other standout in the win. He finished with three points and has four through Detroit’s first three games, continuing to look like the team’s most dangerous forward. McLellan called him “tremendous” and said he was “all over the place,” especially with the different line combinations he worked through.

“I thought Cat had a tremendous game tonight. He was all over the place… Because of 11 and 7 he played a lot of minutes with different people.

He was very good.” McLellan said.

DeBrincat ended the night with two goals and an assist, and he might have had a Gordie Howe Hat Trick if a second-period scrum had gone differently. Instead, he settled for the points and a double minor for roughing.

For Detroit, the bigger picture was simpler: Larkin was back, the lineup looked more balanced, and the Red Wings finally got into the win column.

Dylan Larkins Return Came With A Reality Red Wings Fans Cant Ignore

Dylan Larkins return to the Red Wings lineup after missing two games with an upper-body injury gave Detroit a familiar jolt, even if the circumstances around him remain anything but simple. He had already been through a summer trade request, and the noise around that decision has not faded, but he was back on the ice and helped the Red Wings beat the Ottawa Senators 5-3 with the kind of night Detroit needs from one of its most important players.

The return also came with a reminder that the situation is still uncomfortable for everyone involved. Larkin heard boos from fans and took some chirping from opponents, but he said his focus is on playing and helping the team win until a trade happens. For now, the Red Wings are getting production from a player whose future has been a topic all season, and that reality is hard for their fans to ignore. [Read more 🡒]

Red Wings Fans Got A Response That Only Deepened The Frustration

The early-season mood around Little Caesars Arena has already turned sour, and Chris Ilitch tried to meet that frustration head-on with a letter posted on LinkedIn. After a 1-2 start, Red Wings fans have made their displeasure clear with chants to sell the team and boos directed at captain Dylan Larkin, and the organization is now leaning on promotions to help fill the building while the noise around the club keeps growing.

What made the response land so awkwardly is what it left unsaid. Ilitchs note addressed the frustration, but it did not touch on Steve Yzermans removal or the ongoing search for a new general manager, and the questions around the front office are only getting louder as the situation around top defenseman Simon Edvinsson adds another layer of uncertainty for a team already trying to calm its fan base. Red Wings Face A Tempting Laine Decision Before Someone Else Does

Patrik Laine is still sitting in free agency with the season drawing closer, and the Red Wings are among the teams that have at least kicked the tires internally on what a fit might look like. Detroit is weighing its options with a player who still carries obvious offensive appeal, but the market has remained cautious, in part because Laines preferred destinations seem to be shaping the conversation as much as any hockey fit.

One possible way to bridge that gap is a performance-based contract structure that would limit risk for the team, a setup that could make Laine more palatable to clubs looking for upside without a heavy commitment. For the Red Wings, the intrigue is obvious: add scoring talent without overexposing the roster-building plan. The question now is whether Detroit stays in the mix long enough to matter, or whether another team moves first and leaves the Wings watching from the sidelines. [Read more 🡒]
