Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin will be held off the ice when training camp opens tomorrow after suffering an upper-body injury during training, interim GM Shawn Horcoff said today.
Horcoff did not offer a timetable for Larkin’s return, but said he hopes the 30-year-old can get back on the ice at some point during camp.
The injury adds another layer to an already messy situation in Detroit. Larkin’s trade request became public this summer, though the Red Wings have not been able to line up a deal with another team.
Earlier this month, the club also stripped him of the captaincy. Larkin had worn the “C” since the 2020-21 season, and he has spent his entire hockey life in Michigan, from minor hockey through his time with the Red Wings.
A 2014 first-round pick by Detroit, Larkin has remained one of the names at the center of the league’s trade chatter. He was part of the U.S.
Olympic gold medal team at the 2026 games in Milano-Cortina, and he’s one of several players from that group who have since pushed for changes of scenery. Ottawa’s Brady Tkachuk made his stance clear to the Senators before being dealt to the Florida Panthers in a blockbuster move.
Winnipeg star Connor Hellebuyck is in a similar spot. He has made a public trade request, but the Jets have also been unable to find a package they like enough to pull the trigger. Reports yesterday suggested Hellebuyck would not report to Jets camp while he waits for the team to act on his request.
Larkin, by contrast, had been expected to report and take part in camp. He still will, but the injury means he won’t be skating for now.
On the ice, Larkin has long been viewed as either a low-end No. 1 center or a high-end No. 2 center. His breakout came in 2017-18, when he posted 63 points, and he has topped 70 points three times since then. Last season, he scored 34 goals and finished with 67 points.
His play drew criticism from some Red Wings fans late in the 2025-26 season, when Detroit faded after looking like a near-lock for the playoffs earlier in the year. Larkin hasn’t played in a postseason game since his rookie year in 2015-16, and he’s been one of the faces of the Red Wings throughout the league’s longest playoff drought. Detroit is under heavy pressure to end that run this spring, but it now appears it may have to chase that goal without its top center and former captain.
