In the midst of the Detroit Red Wings' commanding 3-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils, a heartwarming story emerged: Dominik Shine, at 32, notched his first NHL goal. This milestone makes Shine the oldest first-time goal scorer for the Red Wings since Vaclav Nedomansky nearly half a century ago. Nedomansky, a Czech legend who transitioned from the World Hockey Association, scored his debut NHL goal with the Red Wings on December 8, 1977.
Shine, a native of Pinckney and former Northern Michigan standout, will soon celebrate his 33rd birthday. His achievement at 32 years and 324 days places him just shy of Nedomansky's age of 33 years and 269 days when he scored his first.
Shine's journey through nearly a decade in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins, where he served as captain, culminates in this memorable moment. Before his call-up, Shine was having a strong season with 21 goals and 16 assists for the Griffins.
Meanwhile, in other Red Wings news, goaltender John Gibson exited a game early, but initial reports suggest the injury isn't severe. Michal Postava continues to provide reliable goaltending for the Grand Rapids Griffins.
On the offensive front, new additions are expected to boost the Red Wings' scoring capabilities. Justin Faulk's impact was immediately noticeable in his debut, contributing significantly to the team's defensive efforts.
With three shots on goal, three blocks, and four hits in just under 20 minutes of ice time, Faulk was a defensive anchor, directing traffic and shoring up coverage. The Red Wings can look forward to having Faulk for at least another season.
In roster moves, John Leonard has been sent back to the Grand Rapids Griffins, adding depth to their lineup.
