Chris Ilitch’s recent interview with Bob Wojonowski of The Detroit News was supposed to offer some clarity about where the Detroit Red Wings are headed. Instead, it has already started to look painfully out of step with reality.
At the time, Ilitch talked like two major items were close to being wrapped up: a new deal for Simon Edvinsson and an extension for Alex DeBrincat. More than two weeks later, neither has happened, and there’s still no real sign of where the franchise is going. The longer that stretches on, the harder it is to take those comments at face value.
The Edvinsson situation is the clearest example. Asked about the pending issues interim GM Shawn Horcoff was facing, Ilitch said, "I think that's a great question for Shawn, certainly on Edvinsson," Ilitch said. "I know Shawn wants to get him signed, get him on the roster to start the season."
That didn’t age well. The regular season is now two days away, Edvinsson remains unsigned, and he’s in Sweden practicing with a different team.
Then there’s the bigger issue behind the scenes. Ilitch also said, "I've been highly consistent in giving all of our sports leaders 100% autonomy and authority to make the decisions necessary as they see fit. I might have a question to contribute to their thinking, but I would say 99.9% of them go through just as they're recommending."
That sounds neat in theory, but the actual situation makes it harder to buy. According to Adam Johansson of Expressen, Edvinsson’s asking price is in the $9-10M per season range, while the Red Wings are trying to get him under Moritz Seider’s $8.55M cap hit.
In the current market, with the salary cap having exploded, that kind of squeeze makes little sense. Signing Edvinsson at that number should be straightforward.
Trying to keep him below Seider’s deal raises obvious questions.
So either Shawn Horcoff is making a mess of this, or Ilitch’s talk about autonomy doesn’t match what’s happening in practice. Those are the two possibilities, and one is a lot easier to believe than the other.
The most frustrating part of the interview, though, came when Ilitch waved off the noise around the team’s direction.
"I think a lot of it is just talking heads. To be frank, inside the organization, things are operating perfectly well. It’s a bit of amusement to hear and look at some of that stuff."
That line lands badly because the complaints aren’t coming out of nowhere. Fans are upset about the lack of communication, the lack of direction, and the lack of hope coming from the organization’s moves so far.
Edvinsson reported to camp without a contract and has done everything asked of him. In response, the Red Wings have dug in over a few dollars.
Since Ilitch took over as CEO and owner, the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers have the fourth worst record in the NHL and MLB.
