Sidney Crosby’s contract future could have a new wrinkle next summer, and his agent isn’t ruling anything out.
Sheng Peng of NBC Sports Bay Area reported that Pat Brisson, Crosby’s agent, revisited the thinking behind the 12-year, $8.7 million deal Crosby signed when he was 25. Brisson noted that Crosby had already dealt with a concussion, and the contract had to include a concussion exclusion.
“So people say he left money on the table, by virtue of that. Now the last negotiation, two years at 8.7, he didn’t care much.
He kept it that way. His next deal, he may do an extension next summer.
He may sign a one-year deal for $12 . I don’t know.
I want to clarify that he did and he didn’t . We came close to a five-year deal for $60 million at the time.”
Alex DeBrincat’s situation in Detroit has a different feel, but the same basic question hangs over it: what price keeps him in place?
Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now reported that while Dylan Larkin is looking to get out of Detroit, DeBrincat could be headed toward the final year of his contract with the Red Wings. Still, if Detroit is prepared to pay market value, there’s a strong chance DeBrincat stays put.
There would be plenty of teams interested in the three-time 40-goal scorer, but DeBrincat has clear reasons to like where he is. He’s from Michigan, his family is there, and sources describe him as a homebody who wants to be at home when he’s not at the rink. After the season, DeBrincat spoke openly about his preference to remain with the Red Wings.
“I love it here. This is my home.
I’ve loved every bit of playing here. I think this is definitely a team I want to be a part of for a long time, and I think everyone knows that.”
DeBrincat also made clear that he understands how these things work, and that he’ll have to wait and see what the Red Wings decide.

After 12 seasons in North America, Tomas Nosek is heading back to the place where his pro career began. The former Red Wings forward, who started out with HC Dynamo Pardubice before signing with Detroit in 2014, will rejoin his hometown club as it opens training camp on August 17.
