Williamson was listed on the injury report with an illness prior to tip-off against the Detroit Pistons. He gave it a go, but after just 15 minutes of action, he was ruled out for the rest of the night.
In that limited time, he posted four points on 2-of-5 shooting, missed all three of his free throw attempts, and grabbed four boards. The Pelicans, already struggling this season, couldn’t recover, ultimately falling 112-104 to a Pistons squad that came in with its own share of struggles.
That marked Zion’s 30th appearance of the season-just the fourth time in his seven-year career that he’s hit that number. For a player of his caliber, that stat alone says a lot about the uphill battle he’s faced with injuries and now, illnesses.
His most durable campaign came just last season, when he played in 70 games and averaged 22.9 points per night. The production has never really dipped-Zion has consistently averaged over 20 points per game throughout his career-but the interruptions have made it hard for him to string together the kind of consistency needed to lead a franchise.
The Pelicans, now sitting at 10-36, are clearly feeling the weight of another disrupted season. And while the loss to Detroit didn’t hinge solely on Zion’s early exit, it certainly didn’t help.
The team lacked offensive punch and couldn’t find a rhythm down the stretch. To make matters worse, the game featured a lowlight that drew attention of its own-an airball from Jordan Poole that drew boos from the crowd.
