Stan Van Gundy Doubts Pistons' Playoff Prospects in Bold TV Comment

Former coach Stan Van Gundy critiques the Detroit Pistons' playoff potential, citing shooting woes and concerns over Cade Cunningham's effectiveness.

In a recent appearance on FanDuel TV's "Run It Back," former Detroit Pistons coach and current NBA analyst Stan Van Gundy shared some candid thoughts about the Pistons' playoff prospects. Van Gundy expressed concerns, particularly highlighting the team's shooting struggles and how those might be magnified under playoff pressure.

"I have my doubts about the Pistons in the playoffs," Van Gundy noted. He emphasized that when opponents ramp up their defensive intensity, it could become challenging for Cade Cunningham to find space on the court. Beyond Duncan Robinson, he questioned who else on the roster poses a significant threat from deep.

The Pistons' recent 114-103 loss to the San Antonio Spurs spotlighted this issue. Detroit's 3-point shooting woes were on full display as they hit just 7 of 36 attempts (a mere 19.4%), while the Spurs connected on 18 of 40 (45%).

These struggles aren't an isolated incident. The Pistons rank 28th in the league for 3-pointers made per game (11.1) and 21st in 3-point percentage (34.9%). Only Robinson and Cunningham average multiple made threes per game.

In an effort to boost their perimeter game, the Pistons acquired Kevin Huerter at the trade deadline. Known for his shooting prowess during stints with the Hawks, Kings, and Bulls, Huerter has yet to find his rhythm in Detroit, going just 1-for-9 from beyond the arc in four games since joining the team. He hasn't seen action in three games post-All-Star break.

"I think they're going to struggle for this year until they can go out and get more shooting," Van Gundy added, underscoring the need for additional firepower.

Despite his reservations, Van Gundy praised the Pistons for their effort and consistency. "They give you everything they've got every night," he said, calling them "great to watch" and the league's most consistent team in terms of effort.

Van Gundy, who coached the Pistons from 2014 to 2018 and led them to one playoff appearance, brings a wealth of experience to his analysis. His tenure with Detroit ended after a first-round sweep by the eventual champion Cleveland Cavaliers. With a career coaching record of 554-425, Van Gundy's insights carry weight, and his observations about the Pistons' current challenges are certainly worth noting for fans and analysts alike.
