Pistons Tighten Grip On East After Big Win

Harris propels the Pistons as they fortify their lead atop the Eastern Conference with a commanding win over the Timberwolves.

In a commanding display on Saturday, the Detroit Pistons, led by Tobias Harris with 18 points, solidified their grip on the Eastern Conference's top seed with a decisive 109-87 win over the injury-plagued Minnesota Timberwolves. This victory marks the Pistons' ninth win in their last 11 outings, giving them a comfortable four-game cushion over Boston in the race for the top spot.

Jalen Duren was a force on the boards, contributing 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. The Pistons showcased their depth with five other players scoring in double figures, including Daniss Jenkins and Ronald Holland II, each adding 13 points to the tally.

Minnesota struggled without key players, as Anthony Edwards missed his sixth consecutive game due to right knee inflammation. The Timberwolves were also without Jaden McDaniels and Ayo Dosunmu, both sidelined with injuries. The Pistons had their own challenges, with Cade Cunningham missing his sixth game due to a collapsed lung.

Despite the Timberwolves' struggles, Donte DiVincenzo shined, leading Minnesota with 22 points, including five three-pointers. Rudy Gobert chipped in with a double-double, posting 14 points and 12 rebounds. However, Minnesota's shooting woes were evident, hitting a season-low 32% from the field and a mere 21% from three-point range.

The Pistons jumped to an early lead, thanks to Paul Reed's quick six points and Caris LaVert's timely jumpers, ending the first quarter ahead 33-24. DiVincenzo's efforts in the second quarter sparked a 10-2 run, cutting the deficit to 49-44 by halftime, but it wasn't enough to overcome Detroit's balanced attack.

Looking ahead, the Pistons will travel to Oklahoma City on Monday, while the Timberwolves face a challenging matchup in Dallas.
