The Pistons head into Saturday night’s matchup against the Pacers with some cautious optimism, as star guard Cade Cunningham has been listed as probable with a right wrist contusion. It’s not a guarantee, but all signs are pointing toward the 24-year-old suiting up when Detroit tips off at 7:30 p.m. ET, the second game of a three-game homestand.
Cunningham’s status is obviously something Detroit fans-and the Pacers-will be keeping a close eye on. He last played Thursday in a gritty 108-105 win over the Suns, logging 38 minutes despite a rough shooting night.
The numbers? Just 10 points on 3-for-16 from the floor, 0-for-7 from deep, and 4-for-9 at the line.
Not exactly his sharpest offensive showing, but the box score doesn’t tell the whole story. Cunningham still dished out 11 assists and grabbed four boards, playing a steady hand in crunch time as the Pistons held off Phoenix.
That’s been a theme this season. Even when the shot isn’t falling, Cunningham’s impact is undeniable.
He’s taken a big leap in his third year, emerging as the clear engine of Detroit’s offense. Through 34 games, he’s putting up 26.2 points, 9.8 assists, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game-numbers that speak to his all-around game and growing command of the floor.
He’s shooting 45.8% from the field and 32.9% from three, averaging nearly 36 minutes a night. Simply put, he’s the guy for a Pistons team that’s off to a strong 29-10 start.
That makes his availability against Indiana all the more important. The Pacers, sitting at 10-32, have had a tough time defending opposing guards this season. If Cunningham is good to go, he’ll have a prime opportunity to bounce back offensively and exploit a vulnerable backcourt.
After Saturday’s matchup, Detroit will close out the homestand Monday night against the Celtics-a test that will demand every bit of Cunningham’s playmaking and poise, assuming he’s fully healthy. That game tips off at 8:00 p.m.
ET and will be broadcast on NBC Peacock. For now, all eyes are on tonight’s game and whether Detroit’s floor general will be ready to lead the charge.
