MIAMI - Jalen Duren’s night ended abruptly in the second quarter Friday, when the Detroit Pistons center left the road game against the Miami Heat with a right thigh injury and was ruled questionable to return.
The injury happened with 6:45 left in the first half. Duren attacked downhill against Heat superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, then appeared to aggravate something and went straight to grabbing the area behind his right knee. He left the floor immediately and headed to the locker room.
At that point, Detroit was ahead 48-37. Duren had given the Pistons a strong opening stretch before exiting, posting four points, six rebounds and three assists in 10 minutes.
He also handled the assignment on Antetokounmpo and did enough to keep him in check, limiting him to 2-for-8 shooting before leaving. Duren even swatted Antetokounmpo at the rim moments before the injury.
Detroit didn’t blink. The Pistons had already come out hot, scoring the first 11 points and knocking down their first five 3-pointers while building a lead of as many as 17 in the first half. They carried a 65-53 edge into halftime.
With Duren sidelined, Paul Reed opened the second half at center, and Detroit’s cushion only grew. The Pistons stretched the margin from 12 to 21 points, 78-57, with a 13-4 run to begin the third quarter.
Detroit now heads to Philadelphia for the second stop of its three-game road trip Sunday night.
If Duren can’t go, the Pistons’ center options on the roster in 2026-27 include Paul Reed, Tolu Smith and Ugonna Onyenso on a two-way contract. John Collins can also slide from power forward to center.

Ausar Thompson Injury Suddenly Casts A Shadow Over Pistons Win
Ausar Thompsons night ended early against the Heat after he injured his right ankle and left the game in the third quarter, adding another concern to a Pistons team that was trying to enjoy a strong road win. Detroit still handled Miami 128-111, but the result came with an asterisk after Jalen Duren had already exited in the second quarter with a right thigh injury and was later listed as questionable.
The injuries left the Pistons with more questions than answers as they head to Philadelphia to continue the trip. For a team that has been trying to build momentum on the road, the biggest storyline from a lopsided victory may end up being the health of two key young pieces rather than the score itself. Former Bucks Guard Malik Beasley Faces New Questions About His NBA Future
Malik Beasleys NBA future is suddenly back in question after court records showed he is reportedly negotiating a plea agreement with federal prosecutors over charges tied to an alleged gambling scheme involving his performances during the 2023-24 season. Beasley had initially pleaded not guilty, but filings indicate he intends to change that plea, even as his attorney says no final decision has been made.
The case carries obvious weight for a player whose name has already been linked to a broader investigation involving former NBA player Ed Davis and other defendants. The indictment alleges Beasley manipulated performances to benefit gamblers, a serious accusation that hangs over any discussion of where his career goes next and whether an NBA team would be willing to take on that uncertainty. Pistons Could Catch A Huge Break In 76ers Back To Back
The 76ers spent Tuesday night completing a wild rally against Cleveland, erasing a 29-point hole to record the biggest comeback in franchise history and the largest blown lead the Cavaliers have ever suffered. It was the kind of game that reminds everyone how dangerous Philadelphia can be when its top end is rolling, even as the team continues to manage star players carefully early in the season.
For Detroit, the schedule may offer a timely opening if Philadelphia decides to keep Joel Embiid and LeBron James on limited workloads in the upcoming back-to-back. Embiid has already said he will play only one game in that set, and James is expected to be handled the same way, though which night each sits remains unclear. For a Pistons team trying to find every edge it can, the timing of that decision could matter. [Read more 🡒]
