Joel Embiid’s night against Detroit picked up an extra layer of discipline after the league retroactively hit him with a Flagrant 1 for kicking Cade Cunningham.
The sequence came with 5:32 left in the first quarter. Cunningham was guarding Embiid near the three-point line when Embiid extended his right leg during an initial shooting motion. He then moved the ball to LeBron James, but the kick caught Cunningham in the groin and left the Pistons guard bent over in pain.
No whistle came on the play. Cunningham needed time to shake it off while Embiid kept the possession alive and finished at the rim for a dunk. Cunningham was still grabbing at the area afterward.
Embiid’s issues in the game didn’t stop there. He was also assessed a technical foul after shoving Pistons forward Tolu Smith under the basket with 1:25 left in the first half, which sparked a brief confrontation.
That technical and the later Flagrant 1 were Embiid’s first of each kind this season. Under league rules, a Flagrant 1 is worth one point, and a player who reaches six points in the regular season gets a one-game suspension. Two Flagrant 1s in the same game also lead to an ejection, while a Flagrant 2 brings an automatic ejection.
Even with the controversy, Embiid put together a big stat line, finishing with 26 points and a season-high 15 rebounds against Detroit. Through seven games this season, he is averaging 19.6 points and 10 rebounds.
Philadelphia won anyway, moving to 8-1. Jaylen Brown led the 76ers with 30 points and seven rebounds, and Cunningham finished with 26 points and 11 assists for the Pistons.
The teams won’t see each other again until February.

Pistons Fans Have A New Reason To Revisit That Embiid Ending
The Pistons left Philadelphia with a 112-106 loss, but the game will be remembered in Detroit for more than the final score. Joel Embiid was assessed a flagrant foul penalty 1 after kicking Cade Cunningham in the groin, and he also picked up a technical foul for shoving another player in a night that had plenty of edge to it.
Embiid still produced a double-double with 26 points and 15 rebounds, adding another big night to a career that keeps climbing the 76ers record book. For Pistons fans, though, the lasting image is less about his numbers and more about the ending, which gave Cunningham and Detroit plenty to think about after a frustrating finish. [Read more 🡒]
Pistons Look Smarter For Passing On Miles Bridges Now
When Detroit was weighing its options at power forward, Miles Bridges was one of the names in the mix, but the Pistons chose to go another direction and build around players they felt fit better. Instead of making that move, they landed on veterans such as Tobias Harris and John Collins, a pair of additions that gave the front office a different kind of roster construction to work with.
Bridges has long had the scoring and rebounding production that keeps him in the conversation, with career averages of 16 points and 6 rebounds per game, but the defensive questions have followed him from Charlotte to Phoenix. His recent stint with the Suns has only sharpened that concern, with his play on that end drawing criticism and factoring into a decline in Phoenixs defensive rating, which makes Detroits decision to pass look a little wiser in hindsight. Pistons Sixers Just Got More Personal After Heated Cade Incident
Joel Embiids retroactive flagrant foul for kicking Cade Cunningham added another layer of heat to a meeting that already had plenty riding on it. The Pistons and 76ers are both sitting near the top of the Eastern Conference, so every matchup between them carries more than just regular-season weight, and this one now comes with a little extra edge after the incident involving Detroits young star.
Cunningham has been central to the Pistons rise, and Embiid remains the kind of presence that can turn a game into a flashpoint in a hurry. With both teams positioned to matter in the East, moments like this have a way of sticking, and what was already a meaningful matchup now has the feel of something that could grow into a real rivalry.
