Kyrie Irving’s name is already floating into the trade-deadline conversation, and the buzz is coming with a clear message: contenders may value him more than the Mavericks’ timeline does.
Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix pointed to Irving as a player who could draw heavy interest, naming the Houston Rockets and Detroit Pistons as possible landing spots while suggesting Dallas could use him to bring back future assets. Mannix put it bluntly: “I think he’s going to be the most in-demand player at the trade deadline because he’s not on the Mavericks’ timeline.
And we talked about Houston. I think Detroit’s another team that will be salivating over getting Kyrie Irving.”
He also made the case that Dallas could come away with meaningful return value. “They’re off to a great start.
I mean, I think the Mavericks have a chance to get some real assets back in return for a player that’s been good for them. Great locker room guy for them.”
And Mannix didn’t stop there. “He’s really turned himself around in Dallas from his previous stops, but you have a chance to really replenish the draft picks in a deal for Kyrie Irving.”
That said, this was framed as a projection about Irving’s market, not a sign that Dallas has put him on the block. The Mavericks still have reasons to keep him, especially because they value his leadership and the impact he can have on Cooper Flagg.
On the floor, Irving has done plenty to remind teams why he would be such a tempting target. Since returning from his ACL injury, he’s averaging 21.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists while shooting 52.7% overall and 39.0% from three.
His latest performance came against the Rockets, when he poured in 35 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and handed out 9 assists in Dallas’ 116-111 win. He shot 12-of-19 from the field and 5-of-8 from deep.
That game also handed Houston its first loss, another reminder that Irving can still tilt a night after a long recovery from a torn left ACL.
Houston’s interest would make sense on the surface. Adding another scorer and creator next to Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun would give the Rockets another layer offensively. Still, their strong start means any move would have to be weighed carefully against what it might do to the rotation.
Detroit fits the conversation for a different reason. Irving would give the Pistons another shot creator and a steady hand in late-game possessions, especially when playoff defenses make the first action harder to run. But Mannix’s comments stop short of saying Detroit has already started working toward a deal.
The Miami Heat have also been mentioned. ESPN’s Shams Charania has reported that Miami is monitoring Irving’s availability, and Ethan Skolnick of Five Reasons Sports said Irving would be comfortable there. The obstacle for the Heat could be putting together an appealing package after using major assets to land Giannis Antetokounmpo.
For Dallas, the choice is not as simple as picking between present value and future value. Irving helps Flagg develop and keeps the Mavericks competitive, which gives the team real reasons to hold on. A trade only makes sense if the return clearly improves the long-term outlook.
For now, Irving’s comeback has given the Mavericks options, and it has given the rest of the league something to watch. The offers may grow. So may the case for keeping him.

This Refs Pistons Pick Says Everything About That 2004 Team
Rasheed Wallace was never just another bruising big man on that 2004 Pistons team. Even years later, NBA referee Zach Zarba still points to Wallace as the toughest player to officiate, and the reason says plenty about how Detroit played and how Wallace operated inside it. He was smart, physical and always on the edge, the kind of player who could bend a games temperature without ever seeming surprised by the response.
What made Wallace such a problem for officials was not only his edge, but the way he used it. Zarba noted that Wallace would work technical fouls into his own routine as a way to fire himself up and lift the team around him, which fits a Pistons group that won with force and attitude as much as skill. Wallace, a 2004 champion and multiple-time All-Star, still owns the league record for technical fouls in a single season, a reminder of just how far that edge carried him. [Read more 🡒]
Pistons Hot Start Has Fans Eyeing One Massive Backcourt Swing
Detroits 5-1 start has put the Pistons in an unfamiliar spot this early in the season, with the kind of momentum that naturally sends fans and front offices alike looking for the next move. One name now floating into the conversation is Kyrie Irving, with NBA insider Chris Mannix reporting that Detroit has interest in the veteran guard as the Mavericks weigh whether to move him for the right return.
Irving has been part of Dallas recent success since returning from an ACL injury, which only adds to the intrigue around any possible deal. For the Pistons, the appeal is obvious: a hot start can sharpen the focus on upgrading the backcourt, but a pursuit of a player with Irvings profile would also come with a steep price and plenty of moving parts still to sort through.
