Kings Sign Former Top-10 Pick Amid Franchise-Record Losing Streak

Seeking a turnaround, the Kings sign Killian Hayes to bolster their roster during an unprecedented 16-game slump.

The Sacramento Kings are making a bold move in an attempt to turn around their fortunes, signing former top-10 draft pick Killian Hayes to a 10-day contract. This decision comes amid a challenging period for the Kings, who are currently enduring a franchise-record 16-game losing streak.

Killian Hayes, who was the No. 7 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, began his career with the Detroit Pistons. After spending more than three seasons with them, he was released midway through the 2023-24 season.

Hayes then had a brief stint with the Brooklyn Nets, primarily playing with their G League affiliate before getting a short opportunity in the NBA with a 10-day contract. During his time with Brooklyn, Hayes averaged 9.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game, shooting 42% from the field, 38% from three, and 83% from the free-throw line over six games.

Despite these solid numbers, the Nets opted not to extend his contract.

In the offseason, Hayes turned down offers from the EuroLeague, choosing instead to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Although he was waived and moved to their G League team, Hayes showcased his talent by averaging 22.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 8.4 assists, and 1.6 steals per game, with shooting splits of .474/.318/.804 over 19 games.

Now, with the Kings, Hayes has a chance to demonstrate his value. The team recently made the decision to shut down key players Zach LaVine, Domantas Sabonis, and De'Andre Hunter for the season, opening up opportunities for new talent to step up. In LaVine's absence, Russell Westbrook has taken over as the starting point guard, while Devin Carter has been handling duties with the second unit.

As the Kings prepare to face the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday, all eyes will be on Hayes to see if he can inject some much-needed energy and skill into the lineup.
