Detroit Pistons' big man Isaiah Stewart has been a focal point this season, largely due to a suspension that eclipses the one Ben Wallace received after the Malice at the Palace in 2004. This penalty arose from a fiery altercation during a game against the Charlotte Hornets.
Fast forward to Monday, and tensions flared again during the Pistons' matchup with the San Antonio Spurs. This time, it was Jalen Duren and Cade Cunningham in the spotlight.
Even though Stewart wasn’t involved, his reputation lingered. An NBC commentator quipped, “Good thing Beef Stew isn’t out there,” as things heated up on the court.
The scuffle kicked off when Cade Cunningham shoved Spurs guard Stephon Castle, prompting Keldon Johnson to step in with a retaliatory shove. Jalen Duren then escalated matters by pointing a finger at Johnson, leading to both players receiving double technical fouls.
In the end, Victor Wembanyama's stellar performance helped the Spurs clinch a 114-103 victory over Detroit.
Isaiah Stewart's combative nature was highlighted again recently when Milwaukee Bucks' star Giannis Antetokounmpo mentioned him while trying to recruit Devin Booker. Giannis remarked, “I’m like Isaiah Stewart; I’ll fight for you,” showcasing Stewart’s gritty reputation.
Despite the recognition, Stewart is still serving his suspension from the Hornets incident, having completed four games with three remaining before he can rejoin the action.
