The Detroit Pistons may have uncovered a secret weapon from beyond the arc, and it was on full display during their commanding 138-100 victory over the Brooklyn Nets. Shooting a remarkable 50% from three-point range, the Pistons showcased an offensive strategy that could be a game-changer as the playoffs approach.
Without defensive standout Ausar Thompson, Detroit leaned heavily on their three-point efficiency. Leading the charge was All-Star point guard Cade Cunningham, who went 4-for-5 from downtown, tallying 21 points and dishing out 15 assists. This performance not only highlighted Cunningham's shooting prowess but also hinted at a potentially lethal postseason offense for the Pistons.
Since his All-Star Game appearance in early February, Cunningham has been on a tear, shooting 43.2% from three over 11 games. This uptick in accuracy has been a catalyst for Detroit, allowing them to score consistently across all levels.
Currently, the Pistons rank 21st in the NBA with a 34.7% three-point shooting percentage. Even a slight improvement could elevate them closer to the league average, a promising prospect as they gear up for the playoffs. Against the Nets, Cunningham wasn't alone; Marcus Sasser also found his rhythm, matching Cunningham's 4-for-5 performance from beyond the arc.
Coach Bickerstaff praised Sasser, saying, “He’s dynamic also. We know his ability to make shots.
He can score, handle, and initiate. Watching him pick up full court and disrupt the opponent's offense ignites the team.”
With Sasser and Cunningham firing on all cylinders, the Pistons built a comfortable lead, allowing even their bench players, like rookie Chaz Lanier, to contribute. Lanier, who has been shuttling between the G-League and the Pistons, added a three-pointer late in the game, sealing the victory.
Duncan Robinson has been Detroit’s primary perimeter threat, shooting just under 40% from three-point range. His ability to stretch the floor has been invaluable.
However, for the Pistons to make a deep playoff run, Cunningham's continued success from beyond the arc will be crucial. If he maintains his hot streak, Detroit's offense could become even more formidable, making them a tough out in the postseason.
