In the world of NBA rumors, Cade Cunningham found himself at the center of a viral hoax. A parody account on X stirred up quite the frenzy, claiming that the Pistons' standout guard was facing a one-game suspension due to a vaping device found in his locker.
This rumor gained significant traction, racking up over 310,000 impressions and misleading many fans. However, rest assured, it's nothing more than a piece of engagement bait.
The fabricated post suggested that Cunningham would miss the upcoming game against the Thunder, along with teammate Isaiah Stewart, due to this alleged misconduct. Yet, neither the Pistons nor the NBA have substantiated these claims, and Cunningham is expected to suit up for the next game.
Despite the distraction, Cunningham put up a solid performance in the Pistons' recent 114-103 loss to the San Antonio Spurs. He tallied 16 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out 10 assists. While his shooting was off, hitting just 5 of 26 from the field and 2 of 9 from beyond the arc, his playmaking continued to shine.
Meanwhile, Isaiah Stewart remains sidelined, serving a seven-game suspension for an altercation with Miles Bridges in a previous matchup against the Hornets.
The Pistons, boasting a 42-14 record and sitting atop the Eastern Conference, faced a formidable challenge in the Spurs. In a post-game interview, Cunningham acknowledged the impact of Spurs' rising star Victor Wembanyama on the outcome.
"We just couldn’t figure Wemby out early enough," Cunningham admitted. "He changed a lot of our shots and our approach. There were moments where we found our rhythm, but he altered too many shots, and we didn’t adjust in time."
Both Cunningham and Wembanyama are making strong cases in the MVP conversation this season. Wembanyama is putting up impressive numbers with 24.2 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game, shooting 50.8%.
Cunningham, meanwhile, is averaging 25.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 9.8 assists, shooting 45.5%. As the season progresses, their performances will be pivotal in shaping the playoff landscape.
