The Pistons may have come out on top, but there's a cloud hanging over their latest victory. Cade Cunningham, the driving force behind Detroit's impressive season, left the game against Washington early due to back spasms. This happened after a collision with rookie Tre Johnson while chasing a loose ball.
Despite Cunningham's absence, Detroit powered through to a 130-117 win over the Wizards, thanks to a stellar performance from Jalen Duren, who dropped a career-high 36 points. Yet, the spotlight remains on Cunningham's health.
Cunningham has been nothing short of a powerhouse this season, averaging nearly 25 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists per game, leading the Pistons to the top of the Eastern Conference. However, his pursuit of award eligibility, which requires four more game appearances to meet the 65-game threshold, now seems less urgent.
If Cunningham is sidelined, the Pistons will have to rely on Marcus Sasser and Daniss Jenkins. The duo showed promise, contributing a combined 24 points and 11 assists in the game.
Coach J.B. Bickerstaff reflected on the situation, noting, “Unfortunately, we’ve dealt with a lot this season and had to call on different guys. Tonight was an opportunity to do that.”
The Pistons will need to adapt quickly, but with their current momentum and depth, they might just weather this storm.
