Lions Face Uncertainty at Center as Graham Glasgow Weighs Future

The retirement of Frank Ragnow last June left a significant gap, which Graham Glasgow attempted to fill by shifting from left guard. However, the transition wasn't entirely smooth for the seasoned 33-year-old, raising questions about his future with the team.
As Glasgow ponders retirement, his status remains a topic of discussion. "He’s still under contract," Lions GM Brad Holmes remarked at the NFL Scouting Combine. With the league year approaching on March 11, clarity is crucial for the Lions, who might be seeking a new center.
Even if Glasgow continues, his future in Detroit is uncertain. Holmes was non-committal when asked about retaining him, indicating ongoing discussions. Glasgow's contract carries an $8.44 million cap hit for 2026, and releasing him could save the team between $5.5 million and $7 million, funds that could be allocated to a potential replacement.
The Lions may look for an experienced center, as Holmes emphasized the importance of the position. "You’ve got to handle a lot of information," he noted. While rookies can adapt, a seasoned player might be the preferred choice, especially given the lack of standout prospects in this year’s draft.
NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah echoed this sentiment, suggesting the draft may not offer a surefire solution. The Lions, lacking a third-round pick, face a challenge in securing a top center prospect.
Internally, Tate Ratledge presents an intriguing option. Initially drafted as a right guard, Ratledge briefly experimented at center during training camp, despite no prior experience at Georgia. "I think that’s a real option," Holmes said, with head coach Dan Campbell also keeping the possibility open.
As the Lions continue their evaluation, the center position remains an area of uncertainty. The team is in a discovery phase, exploring all avenues to solidify their offensive line for the upcoming season.
